Just been revamped. £550,000 spent. Very nice. Decent meals good beer.
Its an estate pub that had hardcore regulars who are bound to return.
Needs support from new faces though and I hope they do ok.
We will be back because the staff are friendly and the decor and ambiance is first class.
Check it out you won't be dissapointed.

Thank John T

The Coachman has just had a fantastic makeover and with new owners it is a welcoming asset to Whickham.

Since it has only been open for a couple of days you have to forgive a few things as teasing problems are inevitable. Firstly it was not easy finding where to order etc and they had lost our reservation but not an issue as we easily found a table. You order anywhere at the bar and can leave a tab open so you can go back if you want extras which is a bonus as it’s cash only at the moment due to a technical glitch with card readers.

We decided to try Sunday lunch and ordered a chicken, roast belly pork and pink brisket. All meals arrived promptly and looked inviting, the meat was served with a spicy red cabbage, broccoli, carrots, duck fat roast potatoes, peas and Yorkshire pudding. My wife enjoyed the chicken and the belly pork was good but small critism was there was no stuffing with the belly pork or chicken. However the beef was very tough which is probably due to trying to use a cheap cut like brisket and cooking it pink which brisket requires a long slow cook so it melts in your mouth. If we return I would ask for gravy in a gravy boat and pour on myself as the dinner was swimming in gravy.

The service was good and a lot of apologising was going on but a big plus was the pub is dog friendly which will be welcomed in whickham.

I am sure things will improve when the find there feet but in the meantime the Woodmans in Whickham with there new owners are a good way in front with there food. However the decor in the Coachman is great and sure it will be very popular.

Visited the Coachman on various occasions and it has to be said they offer value for money. You never leave hungry as the portions are very generous and home cooked no microwave nonsense going on. The two grill meals and a bottle of wine for £20 is a steal which the gammon is always cooked the way we like it and there massive onion rings are to die for. There fish and chips is also very good as they are real chips not frozen or oven cooked and the batter on the fish is very tasty.

The service is always very friendly and they will accommodate you what ever they can. We also have booked a party for our son and they provide a free room and a buffet for 100 people for a £100 which we were surprised at how much food they provided for the price.
