This is a great pub, with plenty of tables inside and in the garden. Staff were friendly and helpful. They allow dogs inside, and they had a vegetarian friendly menu. We had the vegan burgers with fries. The onion rings were gorgeous. Our friends loved the fish and chips. I can recommend the blue cheese sauce.

Lovely food, excellent service. My pie was the best I've ever had and the salmon starter was delicious.

Thank you Lady Amy, I will make sure the Chefs and front of house team hear of your comments; the Chefs who made the pie and our own Amy who made the salmon mousse -she will be delighted that you enjoyed it!
We do hope we can welcome you again soon.

First opportunity for wife and I to go out for a decent meal in 2021. Phoned several places, all fully booked up for weeks to come but got a 7.30 table easy enough at the Red Lion which has had a good reputation in the past.

Polite young waiter showed us to our table and explained that some menu choices were not available - on a Saturday evening.

Drinks served promptly.

Starters of coconut prawns and Camembert wedges arrived quickly obviously bought in, frozen and deep fried, so nothing special, side salad garnish was good.

Main course whole sea bass stuffed with samphire and fennel was ok. Wife’s pan fried chicken breast was over cooked and very tough, so not edible. No manager in sight, stopped a passing waitress who said sorry quietly and took the meal away. Wife chose not to reorder a meal just a bowl of chips.

Waiter came to say the meal would not be on the bill. Still no manager around.

We had two desserts, paid the bill, and left at 9pm. There was only one other couple in the restaurant and the chef left the building at the same time as us.

In summary, it seemed the main priority was on speed of service and not quality of food.

Ok for a quick pub meal but not as a restaurant.

Hi, I would like to respond to your comments as some are inaccurate. Our lime and coconut prawns are not frozen, they are freshly prepared by us and the Camembert likewise is prepared with herbs etc and oven baked by us. The person who greeted you was the duty manager, not a waiter, and, as our food is homemade and we are open all day on Saturdays, some items had sold out before your arrival. Being homemade we cannot just restock at a moments notice. The standard menu is quite large enough, especially when supplemented by the daily Chef’s Specials menu, to offer a good choice. We make no apologies for selling out of some items; we like to sell everything as quickly as possible! Your wife’s chicken was taken to the Chef as he is naturally interested in any items not being enjoyed. The chicken breast was juicy when cut and not overcooked but obviously your wife is entitled to her own opinion. Apologies were offered by the duty manager ( again, not a waiter) and the meal removed from the bill; your wife chose not to order anything else when offered. You saw one Chef leaving, after a very busy day, as the rest of the Chefs were still cleaning the kitchen having completed their orders. We are not a late dining pub, last orders for food are taken before 9pm, and, after a long and busy day, I am sure the Chefs were happy not to be working after service finished! I am surprised that you imply that it was a bad thing to be able to reserve a table with us at short notice, personally we are always pleased when we are able to accommodate guests! We have a very personal reservations system ( no online bookings with us) with very regular guests, which allows us to judge our table timings pretty accurately. I do not apologise that we were able to offer you a table but do apologise that you obviously wanted your service to be more leisurely but please understand that most guests appreciate prompt service and that if we are not told you wish to wait for your meals then we will bring them when they are ready. I am sorry that we won’t see you again but can assure you that we will remain a pub serving good homemade food and not a restaurant. We have no wish to own a restaurant. We are proud of the independent British pub tradition which is almost unique these days.

Went this evening for dinner, we only had a main course but it was delicious, we both had steak pie with chunky chips and perfectly cooked vegetables. All the staff were friendly and helpful, social distancing was adhered to at all times. Would we go again most definitely.

The Red Lion used to be an absolute gem of the New Forest. However, on our last visit over the bank holiday weekend, it was a major disappointment. The food was overpriced, unusually small portions and the steak pie was definitely not homemade. The dessert menu was no better. Because of covid restrictions we had to sit outside in the cold and so the last thing we would want is a dessert menu with only cold selections from the freezer. Would not return again for a meal, however the toilets were maintained well and very nice. I would recommend to go to the Red Lion for a nice drink and to use the facilities, but not to eat.

Hi,
Apologies for the late response, this review was brought to my attention today by one of our Chefs; I had not received an alert or I would have been in touch sooner. Sorry about the COVID restrictions, we were obviously only following the government rules and we know the weather was not as nice as any of us would have wished for! Our food is not overpriced, the prices have been calculated in the same way for years and actually at the moment, with suppliers prices having risen considerably, are good value for homemade, from fresh, meals. Which brings me to the steak and ale pie, a really popular selection. We make the pies absolutely from scratch, good Hampshire beef, Ringwood ale and shortcrust pastry. I am not sure why you think we would lie but can assure you the pies ARE homemade and fresh! Our portions are not small, only this morning I was speaking with a guest who told me they were embarrassed to ask for a ‘doggy bag’ but found it difficult to finish their main course ( we disapprove of food waste and are always more than happy to pack up unfinished food at a guest’s request). I am glad you appreciated the cleanliness of our washrooms and, should you return, that you will be happy now that we are welcoming guests indoors once more albeit with the new COVID restrictions .
