Currently (May 2021), you have to book a timeslot to visit Scarborough Castle. This was an easy process on the English Heritage website.

As can be seen on many tourist photos, Scarborough Castle is on one of the highest points of this section of the Yorkshire coast. The views are amazing overlooking both North and South Bays. The keep and walls are not accessible to wheelchairs - there are a few steps to climb.

I would have given five stars for the Castle, but the ruins of the former Roman Signal Station were being used as a playground by some rather noisy teenagers and children (why they couldn't go to Peasholm Park, I don't know!) . This really killed the atmosphere of this historic place. I did mention it to a member of staff and he said that they do address this normally, but due to Covid restrictions, they need more staff at the gate.

Lovely view but be careful of the drops. It can be hard to climb the hills around the castle. Very interesting and it even has a ghost.

Great to enjoy a fine example of English heritage - why haven't I been before? Will recommend now. A good example of how to present the history of a place - not full of silly, dumbed down explanation boards. You actually had to work it out yourself with the aid of the guidebook and some old school English Heritage signage. Such a lovely contrast to a National Trust site we had been to a week before which seemed to ignore the heritage and concentrate on play areas and patronising signage! Rant over... And if heritage isn't really your thing, the stunning views from the battlements are worth the admission price alone.

It's good to get back and wander around this castle and take in the views. The Keep and Walls are still open to climb up and they give you great views all over both bays of Scarborough and the Harbour too.

There are unexpected things to check out like Roman Remains and a Chapel.

There's a basic takeaway service from a window to get your drinks and a snack.
