My first trip to Salzburg and i was advised to get a hotel once I arrived. At the train station, the booking agency said the city was sold out, especially old town, unless I went luxury $$$. I snooped on orbitz and this seemed true. I decided to follow Rick Steve's advice and took the bus into town. I seem to follow my intuition past Mozart platz to Hotel Wolf.
I was greeted by Norbert, who seemed doubtful anything was available. He told me to hold on, came back from the kitchen, they just had a cancellation! At a decent rate. I took the elevator to the 3rd floor to find a charming single bed, with desk, chair, big flat screen tv, rustic armoire and a carafe of fresh water. Simple and basic, but real down comforter and pillows? Nice firm mattress, two sets of Windows to keep the room quiet from the lovely, but non stop bells of Salzburg? Yes!
Norbert than got me on the next Sound of MUSIC tour with panorama and plenty of time to try a Thai place around the corner. Afterwards, a brief nap, time to recharge along with my cell phone. There was a handy little shelf on tyre wall and outlet right next to my bed, zzzz, 100%battery power!.
After a week in Germany i still had not tried Bavarian specialties and asked the new gentleman at the desk for advice, the place next door was booked and he told me about his favorite place up a narrow street below the fortress. I was able to get in to Saint Paulies and finished my delicious dinner with walnut schnapps! Prost!
I walked around trying to find nightlife and was blissfully asleep before midnight. I woke up way too early to find the handsome desk agent now getting the breakfast buffet ready. He kindly offered me coffee while preparing a gorgeous traditional breakfast. Picture perfect. He than gave me a printout for the train schedule that morning and directions to the bus.
I am truly grateful to have found this gem built in 1429! True hospitality, oh.. the bathrooms! THEY HAVE HEATED FLOORS!!!! AMAZING a first for me, great water pressure too! Plus very modern. Could have more soap and stuff, oh and a wash cloth. But i didn't ask. Thank you Hotel Wolf. And like that other Austrian original might say "I'll be back!"
