If you wish to be in the old part of Salzburg, Hotel Kasererbraeu is in a very good location. We were there Dec 20-22 and had quick and easy access to the Christkindlmarkt (around which we witnessed the Perchtenlauf), Salzburg Cathedral and the Franciscan Church, the Residenz, and the rest of the Salzburger Altstadt. It meant significantly less walking than would have been the case had we stayed in the Neustadt across the river. That said, it's a little difficult to reach because it's in a pedestrian zone. Cabs are allowed in, though, so if you take a cab you can go right to the front door.
It has a good breakfast room and buffet, which we appreciated, and, when we were there, it had an interesting mix of people from across Europe, as well as the ever-present English speakers. The hotel has a spa, but we did not use it.
Our experience in this hotel was the poorest we had on a trip that included five hotels in Venice, Salzburg, Hallstatt, and Munich. The room was small (one of us had to climb onto the bed from its foot); it had one wooden chair; and the bathroom was dated, with a weak light (normally hotel bathrooms are very brightly lit). Of all the hotels we stayed in, this felt the most "budget."

The hotel building is quite old and is filled with old furniture and interesting decorative items that are reminiscent of old Salzkammergut.
One curious feature: The front desk of this hotel is also the ticket office of the Mozart Kino (the movie theater), so one gets the sense that the owners are not fully focused on the hotel business.
For the most part, the staff were kind, helpful, and attentive, though that was not always true in the breakfast room.
I would consider returning to Hotel Kasererbraeu, but only if I were able to get a more comfortable room.More
