Fantastic Hotel, would definitely stay again!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Nov 30, 2024
Would absolutely recommend this hotel to stay at.
Fantastic location, huge beds and comfy room, with a lovely bathroom and toiletries! Also, the food and drinks at the restaurant were really great, and reasonably priced!
Hotel had everything we needed for our stay.

Return visit to the Alda Hotel as they looked after me very well as a solo traveller last time. This time was our honeymoon and we had a great 4 night stay.
The hotel is centrally located and only a short walk away from most sights (e.g. Solfar, Harpa, Hallgrimskirkja) and 5 minutes from bus and tour stops.
The reception area and staff were welcoming and helpful, our room (4th floor with balcony overlooking the sea / mountains) was clean, well appointed and the bed lovely and comfortable. good size bathroom with l’occitaine products and soft towels and being higher up we didn’t get much noise from the street below only from the howling gale!
we thought the buffet breakfast is good value with lots of choice and also the food in the attached restaurant (Brass) was excellent.
The hot tub and sauna was very welcome after a day of walking and the gym has enough equipment to keep most people happy.
We thoroughly enjoyed this stay and will choose the Alda again when we return.

I found this hotel to be a brilliant location for me and did a lot of sightseeing on foot. The hotel is pretty basic but it ticked my boxes for clean room, comfy bed, plenty of hot water and was quiet (but I was overlooking the inner courtyard). There is no telephone in the room, however they give you a mobile to use instead but I did not bother with that. The staff are bare minimum so no porters etc. Breakfast was adequate. The beetroot shots are quite nice but best to avoid the cod liver oil ones! I ate a number of nights in the Brass Kitchen which is the restaurant linked to the hotel. Access through the hotel or from the street. It is run separately to the hotel so you cannot charge your hotel room. Food and staff were excellent.

If you are pre booking tours, despite some tours offering to pick up from the Alda the street is restricted to cars only so be careful. Bus stop 9 Snorrabraut is the best pick up point. Easy to find and just a few minutes walk away.

Room tip: Bus stop 9 Snorrabraut for tour pick ups. The gym is just a basic room with a sauna. Hot tub right outside but not worth the effort

Despite what others seem to have said lately we really couldn’t fault our stay here. We arrived around 11:30am and were happy to find our room was ready. We had a view over the street from the third floor in a modern well equipped room. The furnishings are nice and I suppose more functional than to some people’s taste but for us this is what we want from a hotel that is a base for some adventures and a place to sleep. There is a little bit of noise from the street as the hotel is centrally located but nothing to get upset about. On the plus side the shops, cafes, restaurants and bars are all on the doorstep. The biggest positive for us though was the staff. The reception staff were all great and really helpful, especially as we had a couple of minor hiccups of our own making which they resolved with us with no fuss, they are a real credit to the hotel and were great for any advice we needed.

Breakfasts were lovely with plenty of choice of fruits, pastries, breads, cold meats, porridge and cooked items. Again the staff work hard here to keep the place tidy and efficient whilst also dealing with the occasional sleep deprived and grumpy customer who has just got off an overnight flight!! We didn’t eat an evening meal here but the restaurant was busy and the food looked good.

Normally we say never go back as there are too many places in the world to visit and stay but the Iceland bug has bitten us hard and we are already talking about coming back and travelling around more to see more of this amazing place. If we decide to stay in Reykjavik again I wouldn’t hesitate to choose Alda Hotel

Terrible experience

We payed 2 nights in advance non-refundable in march 2024. Due to the strike in Germany, the flying company postponed our flight so we lost one night but payed two nights at Alda hotel. We contacted in advance a hotel manager BERGUR RÚNARSSON to ask him if at least we could have a better room or a complimentary breakfast for the only night stayed there but he showed no empathy and wrote us that it was not his problem. In the end he offer to shift our stay for a day but we already booked all of our Holidays so that was no option for us. We travel a lot around the world and this is a first time a manager was so rude. In Europe or Asia they would do everything to make our day better. The worst is yet to come. In the end when we arrived at the hotel the receptionist told us we didn’t have the reservation. We were standing in front of her in shock at night with all of our luggage. Then when I showed her our reservation she just said oh aI was looking at wrong list. No apology no sorries nothing. Unacceptable. The room was ugly standard room and we had no breakfast or whatsoever. I would be more happy if I slept im my big car. We are very disappointed and will never go to ALDA hotel again. Reykjavik is full of better options. Choose better hotels with better management.
