Lovely hotel

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Nov 12, 2024
I just recently stayed here for 4 nights. I'd asked to be placed in a room that wasn't near lift shafts or fire doors, and when I got there, they'd given me an upgrade from a single room to a double, which was really nice. The room was large, with a big wardrobe and a safe. The mattress was memory foam and very comfy, but I do sleep hot, so I found myself waking up in the night from being too warm. The atmosphere of the hotel is very relaxed, and the dinner nice. I had lasagne 2 nights in a row, it was so good, and much cheaper/convenient than going back out to eat. The staff were all very pleasant and didn't hesitate if I needed anything. I did notice the room doors are very heavy (being fire doors), and they really slam if you don't control it when closing, but my fellow guests and I figured out very quickly that you need to hold it until closed, so as not to disturb others. It was in a good location, fairly quiet but within walking distance to the main city. I'd definitely recommend it.

Ok… first, the bad:
* my allergies are in overdrive (I’m allergic to pets & pollen… ). And I’m only symptomatic in the room, so I wouldn’t believe the “hypoallergenic” feature in the listing
* you can’t fill the kettle more than 1/3 because of how the bathroom tap is positioned & the shape if the sink. Pretty dumb.
* they say they have a “gym” but what they have is a small, poorly-ventilated room with a rowing machine, an incline bench and bags of sand (!!) instead of weights. Why. I know for a fact that real weights are available in Iceland.
* there’s literally nothing around the hotel for blocks. They say it’s central, but that friends, is a lie.
* they told me they gave me a free upgrade to a room with a sea view. Which, ok, great, but… it has a view of a parking lot & off in the distance, a *glimpse* of water (see photo). I don’t care because I didn’t pay for it, but if you’re considering paying extra, don’t. Not worth it.

The good:
* really nice staff
* nice restaurant (glacial service … 30 mins for a bowl of soup), but man was it good
* nice shower & toiletries
* Comfy bed

Excellent hotel for the money. I was thoroughly impressed! Loved the cleanliness and the breakfast was amazing, I loved the parking options. The vibe of the hotel was perfect for a quiet setting. I was a solo traveler and it was just perfect for me,

I really liked this hotel, starting with my arrival – 2.5 hours before check-in – when I found that my room was already available and I had been upgraded from a single room to a double with an “ocean view” (the ocean was 500 meters away, but surely the ocean view was better than the view of the parking area in the rear of the hotel). The location was easy to reach by car and parking was problem-free. Once I arrived, I did not use the car because the hotel was close enough by foot to many sights (e.g., 15 min. to Hallgrímskirkja, 20 min. to Lækjartorg in the heart of the business district). The room was tastefully furnished and very clean and quiet, despite being close to the elevator and facing the street. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. I also appreciated the in-room safe, a wardrobe with ample storage, the many electrical outlets and good lighting (except for the area near the desk, where the task lighting could be improved). There were blackout drapes on the windows which would be essential during the middle of the summer. The staff were very friendly. The breakfast buffet (3590 ISK) was outstanding with organic eggs, local bacon and sausages, several excellent cheeses, great pastries and several Icelandic specialties such as rúgbrauð (rye bread), herring, skyr, etc., as well as standard items such as cereals, fruits, etc.

We really enjoyed our stay at Eyja Guldsmeden. We loved the welcoming decor of the entrance and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was perfect for 3 travellers. We were gratful for an elevator and the housekeeper was very kind and even waited a bit for us to leave so she could clean our room. We would definately recommend this hotel and would be happy to stay here again.

Room tip: Great hotel, but beware it's about a 15minute walk to the downtown area.

The hotel is good, but I wouldn't stay again, it's simply because of the services and friendliness of the staff. I am working in hospitality too since more then 25 years, 10 of these years in boutique. Check in and out was so impersonal, I was a bit surprised. The only 2 team members that were outstanding were Housekeeping and the Chef at my last night, that prepared the Icelandic platter for me, which was very good! The bathroom amenities were great, that there is no mini fridge, is an issue, especially when you travel with medication and that there are no wall hooks to hang your jacket when coming from outside, especially when it's raining and you come in completely drenched. You don't want to hang these into the cabinet to not damage the wood. The bathroom door, mentioned in other reviews is indeed a bit funny/ weird.
