The better Cumulus in Tampere

Review of Cumulus Pinja
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 24, 2015via mobile
As typically in chain hotels, no big surprises. 90€ felt like decent price for two persons during Tammerfest. Room was tiny but ok. Locations is good and breakfast was normal as well. Receptionist was very helpful and there seemed to be good playground for kids next to the restaurant.

Hotel Pinja is part of Cumulus chain of hotels, with the pros and cons.
Not so expensive, not so fancy either.

The hotel itself consist of two buildings, the older art nouveau building, the annex is from the 90´s (post modernism). There could be a need for a little bit of renovating, but in overall the hotel is clean, tranquil and kind of cozy.
We had an standard twin room. It was spacious enough and the bathroom was ok. The shower corner could use some repairing, cause when showering, water kept running beneath the cubicles walls to the bathroom floor -> wet socks..
There is a minibar in the room, but it´s empty. You must buy the stuff you need from the reception.

Our room was in the 90´s –part of the hotel, facing towards the quiet side street.

The staff at the reception could be little more kind and helpful, but they do they job. The breakfast was relatively nice, everything I need at least (coffee, bread&stuff, eggs, something sweet). Funny detail: instead of bacon, there is black sausage (mustamakkara). Try it with jam of lingonberry. A traditional Tampere –food.. which is actually better when enjoyed outdoors and fresh in Tammela market place.

The location of the hotel is quite nice. Not far from the main street of Tampere (Hämeenkatu) but yet in a quite peaceful environment. The Tampere Cathedral is just around the corner and it`s a must-see, if visiting Tampere as a tourist.

There are nearby two of the most adorable café´s on Tampere; Vohvelikahvila (“The house of waffles”, Ojakatu 2) and the café Runo ( “Café Poet”, Ojakatu 3 ).

Room tip: The rooms facing the side street are even more quiet.

Right, so this hotel isn't for everyone. You step back in time to the 1920's but I loved it. Modern necessities worked great, fast internet, good breakfast, comfortable bed. The shower was powerful, but it did not hold a steady temperature. It was good value as well and service was really friendly. If you don't mind the old decor, it's a great hotel. I knocked off one point for the inconsistent shower temperature.

Hotel Pinja is located close to the Tammerkoski rapids and near the commercial center of Tampere, in a quiet area. The building is an old house in jugend-style, nicely renovated but the rooms are rather small. Due to the room size, there is only one big chair, the minibar needs to be ordered separately.

The important things are fine: the beds are comfortable, the room is quiet, the bath spotless and equipped with real glasses for the toothbrush, no plastic here.

The hotel restaurant closes early, at 10 pm, but the main street restaurants are barely a 10 min walk away. Reception personnel was attentive and friendly, there is a garage if you arrive by car.

Room tip: Rooms towards the side-street are most quiet.

Pinja has its pros and cons. It is a nice old building with narrow corridors, doors, adjoining rooms rather than big open spaces - it clearly has some charming character. On the other hand many spaces are a bit dark and uninviting. Economy rooms are quite small but sufficient and well enough equipped if you are not planning to spend a lot of time in your room. Rooms are fairly clean, but some desperately need renovation as they look worn out and murky. On the other hand some rooms, especially the ones facing the courtyard, are rather nice and well designed.

Breakfast area is almost tiny and probably crowded if you are there at the peak hour. I don't have complaints about the breakfast itself but there is no variation - same chain hotel menu every time.

Service is usually friendly, but reception can get crowded at times. The hotel is rather well located, a few blocks away from the main street. Wifi was working fine.

I've stayed in Pinja several times because their rates are more affordable than many other hotels in the city. Still I'm not 100% if I get my money's worth every time.

Rooms were really nice. No complaints. Reception seemed quite narrow and lacked space. Staff was friendly. Parking garage barely fitted my car. It was even harder to get out from there. Breakfast, however, was very enjoyable and tasty.

Room tip: Second floor at the time felt like a good choice.
