“Cosy place, fine food and great music”
Review of Jazzhus Montmartre

Jazzhus Montmartre
Reviewed 19 January 2015

Even though we live in Copenhagen and love jazz, it was the first time we went to Montmartre. It is a small venue, where it is possible to have a set 3-course dinner prior to the show, or just show up for the concert. We decided to have the dinne options, and the food was fairly good for the price, but obviously there was choice except the set 3-course menu. The concert was by the Brazilian singer Joyce Moreno - who at 65 is still a world class act - and her trio of really professional musicians. It is incredible that sucha small place attracts musicians of this quality at a very reasonable price. So if you are visiting Copenhagen, check out the schedule, but do it in advance as the number of tickets is very limited.

This is the place. What I really enjoyed was the general respect shown on both sides - the musicians respected the knowing crowd, and the crowd truly appreciated the musicians (Carsten Dahl and friends), creating an environment for musical exuberance, spontaneity, and at times pure genius. Yes, some seats are perhaps more comfortable than others, there's a beam in the middle of the floor blocking a bit of the view, the servers are non-stop busy, but everyone's there for one thing - the love of jazz.

Kasper was simply the perfect host. We were late for dinner but he was not phased. Apart from Olympian sprinting between tables, serving, liaising and clearing, he amazingly found/created time to be amiable, charming and efficient.
We are impressed and will definitely return ASAP.

This is one of my favorite places to hear jazz in the city. The programming, while centered in the swing tradition, embraces many faces in the jazz family. I usually come out once a month or so with friends or by myself to hear American jazz stars and Danish jazz royalty (like Alex Riel, Bo Stief and more). Even if you don't recognize the names of the musicians, you can trust that it is going to be a wonderful night of music and discovery. As an American living in Denmark, I also love the historical connection between the American jazz giants (Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Kenny Drew) and Jazzhus Montmartre's early days.

I've been to Jazzhus Montmartre about 6 times. Every single time, they have delivered world class jazz. And also many different types of concerts, all from tribute evenings to story-telling concerts spiced with jazz. It's a smaller place so you have every chance of truely experiencing the music.
I guess there is a reason why Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Kenny Drew, Stan Getz and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen chose to hang out here...
