Fantastic Hotel

Review of Hotel Baia Azul
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Oct 5, 2024via mobile
Fabulous family hotel with some of the best views on the island. Located in a prime position with a fantastic shuttle service to Funchal. But also some great restaurants and bars within walking distance.
Rooms all have excellent views and are kept clean throughout our stay.
Staff were also very friendly and welcoming.

From start to finish our holiday at the Baia Azul was just what we needed. Reception Staff were super friendly & efficient. Cleaning Team were non stop, but always said Ola & smiled. Breakfast Team again were super friendly & very attentive. Pool was always clean, slightly chilly but refreshing on a hot day. Our road side room was big, airy, clean & very comfy beds. You have to bring your own coffee, normal size coffee cup & spoon. Also you have to pay for the safe.
Slept well & enjoyed the Madeiran Hospitality.
Obrigado 🙏🏻

Room tip: Coffee & Coffee cup

The hotel is slightly out of the centre but you can get free transport courtesy of the hotel. Met upon arrival by a very friendly reception team. We had booked a room on the 11th room but with 3 lifts getting up there wasn't a problem and well worth it. Clean and spacious with tremendous views across the bay completed a fabulous experience. We had booked breakfast only and the choice and quality of the food credited the 4 star grade. The hotel is spotlessly clean throughout and facilities excellent. Now to the best part, the staff, polite, friendly, supportive and attentive helped finish of a most enjoyable experience. We will definitely be back and won't be looking at any other hotel for our next trip to Funchal.

Room tip: If you can walk then do so. So much to see walking in to funchal. Take on one of the tours at least. We did the East tour with Windsor travel, Check out the old town.

What an amazing hotel, beautifully positioned to maximise the stunning view of the sea. It is set on a hill so access to and from for the less able. Ignited be an issue. We had a room on the 8th floor with a small balcony which allowed full view of the beautiful sunrise each morning. The bed was comfortable with plenty of room and storage space in the wardrobes. Kettle and tea provided but no coffee or milk. Small fridge/mini bar for storing your own milk/wine etc. Daily maid service and everything kept beautifully clean. Large walk-in wet room/shower. The staff are so friendly and helpful from the glass of Madeira wine when we entered, right through to when we left. Organised the dolphin/whale watching trip on the eco catamaran (which is a must do trip) and phoned for taxis etc. Courtesy bus runs into Funchal and drops off at the CR7 museum near the port. Breakfast is brilliant - everything you could wish for and the opportunity to eat outside. We stayed B&B so didn’t sample the evening g meal. However, we did eat at the Sal Italian restaurant on site three times. We ate outside overlooking the pool and the sea beyond. Extensive menu and great food, beautifully presented by lovely staff. Highly recommend. The pool area is beautifully clean and no sunbed grabbing (maybe due to a polite notice saying unoccupied sunbeds would have the towels etc removed and put in reception for collection by the owners!) Loads of sunbeds available and most in the sun all day but parasols for every pair of beds which provided much needed shade. No music blasting out, a view to die for from every area, snacks from the poolside bar, what’s not to like? Overall a hotel to recommend and hopefully return to soon.

Room tip: Visit the Italian restaurant on site - well priced & great quality food. Do the eco Magic Dolphin whale/dolphin watching trip.

This hotel is just a short distance from the centre of funchal, but a 10 minute bus ride or a 40 minute walk gets you to the marina. When we arrived we received a warm welcome, all the reception staff were very helpful and friendly. The hotel like our room was spotlessly clean. Our room had a fantastic balcony with a wonderful sea view we spent many hours just sitting and watching the boats and swimmers. Breakfast was very good with a huge selection that should please everyone. The pool area although small was really nice and we always managed to get sun-beds, as the hotel has a policy of removing towels, if people “reserve” sun-beds and do not use them, which is a great policy. The pool bar was also excellent. Couple of small moans the sun-beds were extremely uncomfortable they could certainly do with being replaced, however there is so much to do on this wonderful island that you do not spend too much time on them. Second moan was the bar staff were selective in who they served, sometimes ignoring guest for some time, but frustrating. All in all a great hotel we will definitely be returning next year.

Room tip: Pay for a sea view room well worth it, mountain view rooms look onto the main road, and there is not much of a view.

Not a 4 Star

We arrived at the hotel lovely reception area. We were given room keys and had to take our own cases and find the room ourselves.
Room was clean and fairly spacious. The plug in the sink did not work so we had to make do with running water. The shower was ineffectual.
For a spa hotel there was plastic soap dispenser in the shower and one by the sink. No toiletries etc.

The area outside is lovely for a drink in the evening, the live music was very good. However our room was directly over the music at night. Take ear plugs if you want to sleep before 11 0’Clock. Drinks are reasonably priced,

Food . Breakfast was ok but always the same. In the evening I thought the food was like canteen food no vegetables really and it all tasted the same. We were half board but had to resort to eating out. The dining room is awful it’s like a cafeteria .

Make your own coffee and hot drinks.

I agree with one lady on here the towels are tiny and so thin you could almost see through them. Yo get a decent towel I had to pay 1€ each day to change the pool towel in order to have a decent towel at night.

The Pool.
Cramped area with too few dun beds. Two thirds of the pool is a paddling pool a third is 4’ deep no chance of a swim. I think the pool is I important as no beach.
Overall would I stay again ? Not likely.
