Review of Hotel Baia Azul
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 16, 2024via mobile
Not a 4 Star

We arrived at the hotel lovely reception area. We were given room keys and had to take our own cases and find the room ourselves.
Room was clean and fairly spacious. The plug in the sink did not work so we had to make do with running water. The shower was ineffectual.
For a spa hotel there was plastic soap dispenser in the shower and one by the sink. No toiletries etc.

The area outside is lovely for a drink in the evening, the live music was very good. However our room was directly over the music at night. Take ear plugs if you want to sleep before 11 0’Clock. Drinks are reasonably priced,

Food . Breakfast was ok but always the same. In the evening I thought the food was like canteen food no vegetables really and it all tasted the same. We were half board but had to resort to eating out. The dining room is awful it’s like a cafeteria .

Make your own coffee and hot drinks.

I agree with one lady on here the towels are tiny and so thin you could almost see through them. Yo get a decent towel I had to pay 1€ each day to change the pool towel in order to have a decent towel at night.

The Pool.
Cramped area with too few dun beds. Two thirds of the pool is a paddling pool a third is 4’ deep no chance of a swim. I think the pool is I important as no beach.
Overall would I stay again ? Not likely.

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Staff was courteous. Hotel had a lot of amenities! Hotel was very clean. Loved the welcome personal cakes left in the room for us. Hotel had great restaurants near- and the mall was only a few minute walk. If we travel to Madeira again, we will definitely stay here!

We've stayed here for one night at the end of our Madeira adventure. The hotel itself is beautiful with wonderful views of the ocean and the pool. The room is spacious and elegant, and the breakfast was amazing.

The only minor negative was the staff who seemed a bit aloof. First, when we checked it, we were not informed about the pool towels located in the room. Usually, they are found at the pool itself - when we asked, we were told they would be 1E each. The price is not the issue, it's the principle - I think this was the first time that I was asked to pay for the pool towel. It just seemed so bizarre.

When we checked out, the receptionist seemed indifferent when I asked why we weren't informed - she coldly pointed me to the card machine, and that was a bit off-putting.

This hotel is stunning. The staff are super friendly and the location is stunning, the views are amazing. Very clean, bright and love the decor. We also dined at the A La Carte restaurant a few times and the food was fantastic and the kitchen very accommodating - the menu clearly specifies allergens etc, would recommend eating at the A La Carte Italian

We absolutely loved our stay - thank you!

Beautiful hotel, quieter area then Funchal, we liked that, exceptionally clean, all the staff professional and welcoming, room standard size but sea view a must, bar prices very good a glass of fizz €4.50, great cocktails at €7 plus, breakfast was good something for everyone, great it’s available until 11am, plenty of fantastic restaurants nearby so we didn’t have evening meal here.
Sun beds not very comfortable for a 4star hotel no cushions, chairs on the bar terrace also not comfortable and difficult to get out of! Style over substance. Towels a bit worse for wear and some need replacing.
Overall a very relaxing stay.
The cable car in Funchal is great and the the gardens at the top are just beautiful well worth a visit

Room tip: Big supermarket up the road for all essentials

We last visited Madeira in 2016 as a couple and loved the island. We picked Hotel Baia Azul with Jet2 for this second trip with our 5yr old son. This was our first holiday together as a family abroad and we loved every minute. The hotel was everything we could have hoped for and more, child friendly but an adult feeling hotel with the decor and vibe (just what we like). The hotel was spotless and beautifully decorated, we had a sea view from and the views from the pool and the roof terrace bar area were such a treat to look at everyday. The breakfast was delicious and lots of choice. Drinks and food costs were reasonable in the hotel and you are in an ideal location to visit many different restaurants and bars in the area and trips to the supermarket for essentials. We got home yesterday and rebooked last night to visit again next August 🩵 Can’t wait already!!
