Wonderful Hotel

Review of Hotel Baia Azul
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 6, 2024
This was our second visit to this wonderful Hotel and it will not be our last. (Already booked for next year!). All the staff are friendly and very helpful especially the maids who always said hello and kept the place spotless. There is plenty of choice for breakfast: - fruit, cold meats, pastries, cereals, yogurts, pancakes and a variety of cooked dishes, definitely something for everyone. The pool area is great but only opens at 08:00, we are early risers so always got a sun bed, and there always seemed to be sun beds available later in the day. The Blue bar by the pool serves food and drinks from 10:00- 18:00. The sun deck is a nice and peaceful area, perfect to relax and chill. The Hotel also has the a la carte Sal Restaurant which is amazing and became our most visited restaurant of our fortnight. Great location with lots of good restaurants, shops and the Forum Shopping Centre all within easy walking distance. A free courtesy bus into Funchal is provided, and drops off and picks up at the CR7 museum, which is well worth a visit or two. All in all, a great Hotel, great location, great staff and we would highly recommend. We will be back next June.

I can’t fault this lovely hotel. The rooms are spacious with very comfy beds. We had a fantastic sea view with a good sized balcony. The food is great whether you are at the breakfast or evening buffet or the Italian restaurant. The pool is fab with lots of beds that aren’t snatched early on. There is a sun deck/bar that has entertainment every night for a couple of hours. Staff are friendly and hard working. There are lots of shops, bars and restaurants nearby and the taxi to the city is only 9 Euro. Buses are frequent but busy and the hotel has a free shuttle bus at set times. This isn’t a particularly child friendly hotel which is why I chose it. It is really for families with older children or adults only. There are no children’s facilities.

This was a spur of the moment booking and like many others we found it to be a great choice. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We too were lucky to be given a sea view room which was spacious and very clean. On the sun deck every evening there was musical entertainment that helped make you feel chilled while you watched the passing water traffic as the sun went down. It was easy to get into the centre of Funchal from the hotel who even provided a complimentary bus daily but we took the yellow buses from outside the hotel which were very frequent and using the card with prepaid journeys bought in advance were very cheap. Lots of lovely restaurants close by to try and handy shops in and around Forum Madeira which was almost identical to Forum Algarve which we know well. I am sure we will return to Madeira and when we do, we hope to stay in this hotel again. Thank you for making it an very enjoyable experience.

Room tip: The sun is on the pool area and the outside breakfast area most of the day so make sure you have sun protection with you.

This hotel I would rate 10/10. All the staff were lovely and very friendly, and the whole hotel was spotlessly clean and bright. The breakfast buffet was amazing, so much choice, catering for everyones needs. We went during the euros, my husband is a massive football fan and enjoyed the banter with the bar staff. Big shout out to the cleaning ladies who were all very friendly and lovely, and kept our rooms nice and clean daily. We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary while there and the hotel made it special for us by leaving chocolate coated strawberries in our room with a selection of chocolates and a nice bottle of sparkling wine.

We stayed here for a week in June and thoroughly enjoyed our time here! We stayed in a Mountain View room, which despite facing onto a main road it was fairly quiet. If we were to return we would definitely consider paying extra for a sea view room, as the views were stunning!
Great location, lots of restaurants and shops nearby, and the forum shopping centre (which has a supermarket) is a 5-10 minute walk away. The walk into Funchal is approx a 30 min walk. There's a complimentary shuttle service from the hotel but the times were limited so we just used the public buses which were cheap and easy to use.
The hotel is clean and modern, and the rooms were spacious. Lots of choice for breakfast and plenty of sun loungers around the pool.
15 euros for the safe for a week.
An amazing hotel in a great location, I would recommend!!!

Room tip: Go on a tour to Porto Moniz and swim in the volcanic pools - cold but a fun experience!

The hotel ticks so many boxes, but egos and attitudes let it down in parts.

Upon arriving, we noticed how well presented and clean the lobby and reception area was. We were checked in promptly and given a free drink to welcome us, which was a nice touch. We took it to the terrace and admired at the amazing view. It should be noted how clean and well presented the terrace was.

So the room:

Pros: The bed was comfortable and spacious. The room was clean, looked nice, and had a good-sized balcony. The bathroom was nice, with a decent shower. There was plenty of space to store luggage and to stretch out. The room was always well cleaned, and the staff were awesome and funny. We had two soft toys that travelled with us, and they were moving them around the room and putting them in hilarious positions.

The cons: We were meant to be a mountain view room. We weren't. We were facing the main road and even with the doors closed to the balcony we could hear a lot of noise. The air con didn't work. There is a safe, but you need to pay for it. There isn't any coffee in the room, and the teas don't get replenished.

Food: We didn't fancy the menus for dinner but breakfast was nice. A huge selection of stuff is available, and it was changed daily. The kitchen knows how to cook good food. The only downside was the sausages were awful and the juice wasn't very nice, but that aside we were very happy. The staff here were also really good and kept everything clean and tidy throughout.

The bar: This were the hotel is let down. We spent quite a bit in the bar early on, but service was very slow at times. One evening, we waited over half an hour before calling it a night. The next, my wife was served alcohol which could have made her very ill. We pointed and repeated numerous times what drinks we wanted, and still, it got messed up. My wife hasn't had alcohol since 2011. In that time, we've been all over the world, and not once has someone messed up and given it to her.

I went to sort the issue out, but the team behind the bar couldn't grasp what the issue was and thought it was a joke and found it funny, saying no problem repeatedly. I'm sorry, it could have been a very serious problem.

I addressed this issue with reception and they were great and understanding. The barman that made the drink did come out to apologise but he still couldn't grasp the issue.

From that point, we didn't spend any money in the bar again and instead brought our own drink in. Much to the annoyance of another staff member, but one of the team from the incident spoke to him, and that was sorted, so credit given there.

Amenities: From what we used. The gym was tiny, but I have seen worse. Two is company and three is a crowd in that space. Indoor pool was lovely and quiet whilst the outdoor pool was also nice, but very busy with other guests reserving deckchairs when they wasn't meant to. The bus into Funchal was handy for one day, though the drop off was outside the CR7 museum. It would have been better being more towards the bus station.

Location: Sure it's a little walk to the middle of Funchal, but it's a nice walk with plenty of nice restaurants along the way. Close by there are some great restaurants and a shopping centre very close as well which was fantastic.

Overall, the bar let's the hotel down, but take that away, and it was a perfect stay. A sea view room would probably make a huge difference, but the imperfections in the room can be ignored as we weren't spending much time in there anyway.

Room tip: Ask for a sea view room and be prepared to walk at least 30 minutes into Funchal .
