Review of Hotel Baia Azul
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 17, 2024
This hotel I would rate 10/10. All the staff were lovely and very friendly, and the whole hotel was spotlessly clean and bright. The breakfast buffet was amazing, so much choice, catering for everyones needs. We went during the euros, my husband is a massive football fan and enjoyed the banter with the bar staff. Big shout out to the cleaning ladies who were all very friendly and lovely, and kept our rooms nice and clean daily. We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary while there and the hotel made it special for us by leaving chocolate coated strawberries in our room with a selection of chocolates and a nice bottle of sparkling wine.

We stayed here for a week in June and thoroughly enjoyed our time here! We stayed in a Mountain View room, which despite facing onto a main road it was fairly quiet. If we were to return we would definitely consider paying extra for a sea view room, as the views were stunning!
Great location, lots of restaurants and shops nearby, and the forum shopping centre (which has a supermarket) is a 5-10 minute walk away. The walk into Funchal is approx a 30 min walk. There's a complimentary shuttle service from the hotel but the times were limited so we just used the public buses which were cheap and easy to use.
The hotel is clean and modern, and the rooms were spacious. Lots of choice for breakfast and plenty of sun loungers around the pool.
15 euros for the safe for a week.
An amazing hotel in a great location, I would recommend!!!

Room tip: Go on a tour to Porto Moniz and swim in the volcanic pools - cold but a fun experience!

The hotel ticks so many boxes, but egos and attitudes let it down in parts.

Upon arriving, we noticed how well presented and clean the lobby and reception area was. We were checked in promptly and given a free drink to welcome us, which was a nice touch. We took it to the terrace and admired at the amazing view. It should be noted how clean and well presented the terrace was.

So the room:

Pros: The bed was comfortable and spacious. The room was clean, looked nice, and had a good-sized balcony. The bathroom was nice, with a decent shower. There was plenty of space to store luggage and to stretch out. The room was always well cleaned, and the staff were awesome and funny. We had two soft toys that travelled with us, and they were moving them around the room and putting them in hilarious positions.

The cons: We were meant to be a mountain view room. We weren't. We were facing the main road and even with the doors closed to the balcony we could hear a lot of noise. The air con didn't work. There is a safe, but you need to pay for it. There isn't any coffee in the room, and the teas don't get replenished.

Food: We didn't fancy the menus for dinner but breakfast was nice. A huge selection of stuff is available, and it was changed daily. The kitchen knows how to cook good food. The only downside was the sausages were awful and the juice wasn't very nice, but that aside we were very happy. The staff here were also really good and kept everything clean and tidy throughout.

The bar: This were the hotel is let down. We spent quite a bit in the bar early on, but service was very slow at times. One evening, we waited over half an hour before calling it a night. The next, my wife was served alcohol which could have made her very ill. We pointed and repeated numerous times what drinks we wanted, and still, it got messed up. My wife hasn't had alcohol since 2011. In that time, we've been all over the world, and not once has someone messed up and given it to her.

I went to sort the issue out, but the team behind the bar couldn't grasp what the issue was and thought it was a joke and found it funny, saying no problem repeatedly. I'm sorry, it could have been a very serious problem.

I addressed this issue with reception and they were great and understanding. The barman that made the drink did come out to apologise but he still couldn't grasp the issue.

From that point, we didn't spend any money in the bar again and instead brought our own drink in. Much to the annoyance of another staff member, but one of the team from the incident spoke to him, and that was sorted, so credit given there.

Amenities: From what we used. The gym was tiny, but I have seen worse. Two is company and three is a crowd in that space. Indoor pool was lovely and quiet whilst the outdoor pool was also nice, but very busy with other guests reserving deckchairs when they wasn't meant to. The bus into Funchal was handy for one day, though the drop off was outside the CR7 museum. It would have been better being more towards the bus station.

Location: Sure it's a little walk to the middle of Funchal, but it's a nice walk with plenty of nice restaurants along the way. Close by there are some great restaurants and a shopping centre very close as well which was fantastic.

Overall, the bar let's the hotel down, but take that away, and it was a perfect stay. A sea view room would probably make a huge difference, but the imperfections in the room can be ignored as we weren't spending much time in there anyway.

Room tip: Ask for a sea view room and be prepared to walk at least 30 minutes into Funchal .

The hotel itself was nice and well-presented. The facilities and pool were clean, and the restaurant was well-kept and not busy at all. The bar area was pretty at night.
There were slightly too few sun loungers for the amount of people there, but the bar was nice. The indoor pool was good.

My main issue was that my room did not have a balcony or a 'Mountain view' as advertised - our room had a small window that faced a wall. When we asked to move, we were told that our booking had no guarantee of a balcony and we would have to ask the following day to see if we could switch, which I felt was a disappointment as on the website and my booking confirmation Balcony was listed as an included feature and in all photos, and 'mountain view' was the name of the room listing.

When we asked again, they eventually agreed to let us move to a room with a bigger window, however, this still did not have the mountain view, and looked at another hotel- not a mountain! Overall the room was a disappointment and not at all what the pictures and description on the website had described.

We felt our stay would have been much improved if we had been prewarned about the room and want other guests to know that you may get a room facing a wall!

Amazing hotel with a great location. Not too far from Funchal and a courtesy bus is provided if needed. Staff are all friendly and Paulo was brilliant. Food is nice with a good selection. The Italian restaurant in the hotel is amazing with lots of choice and we would eat there again if we could. Rooms were spotless with nice decor and very comfy beds. The only thing which was a downfall is the lack of hot drink facilities in the room. Tea bags but no coffee or milk. When asked we were informed that they do not provide coffee and that there is no milk for the rooms so to collect from the bar. Ended up buying coffee and milk from the supermarket which is a 5 minute walk. Tea bags/sugar and spoons were never restocked so we ended up having to take them from breakfast. There is no shop in the hotel either so we had to walk to the supermarket. Be careful with conjoining rooms as it can be very noisy especially if people next door have children. Would 100% stay again if we came back to Madeira and do recommend to anyone going!

Room tip: Do a jeep tour as it was amazing and go to forum madeira which has shops/supermarket! It is a 5 minute walk. Bring your own tea/coffee.

Wonderful week staying at Baia Azul. Spotlessly clean throughout. Huge reception area which opens onto the terrace overlooking the pool area and the ocean. Terrace is very chilled area and drinks in the evening are served by the very attentive staff
Room was a great size. Beds comfy, plenty of wardrobe space, air con was good. We had booked a mountain view but actually had a sea view which is a bonus! Lovely to wake up to. Maids do a fabulous job.
Short walk (15 mins) to some lovely restaurants and continue walking into Funchal. Hotel does provide a free bus into Fuchal at set times so we took the local bus which was very good - €2
Very enjoyable experience and would definitely return in the future - lots more of Madeira to explore
