We very much enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The room was very clean, spacious and comfortable, with an amazing view (we paid extra for a seaview room). We did not try the spa facilities, but enjoyed the nice outdoor pool. The hotel has an excellent location, being close to a big shopping centre, several good restaurants, a supermarket, a nice bakery etc. Walking to Funchal city centre takes about 40 minutes, but there is also a complimentary shuttle and plenty of local buses. Hotel staff was nice & friendly, and the breakfast diverse and plentiful. Thank you for a lovely holiday!

The reception/bar area was beautiful. The patio area was nice but lacked seating. The nightly entertainment was nice but with the odd seating and no set area for entertainment it made it difficult to enjoy.
The room was nice and bathroom was nice. Comfortable bed, good cooling air conditioner and relaxing setting.

The lady at reception was so nice! I really wish I could remember her name. The hotel made a birthday cake for my mother-in-law actually one small one and one large beautifully decorated one with the group. Made her 80th birthday very special. It was a great visit to Madiera and the hotel staff added to that experience.

This is a hotel that doesn't disappoint!! The rooms, food and staff are all first rate. I've just spent a week there and everything was faultless. I would never hesitate at going again. Te city of Funchal is quite charming; full of character and elegance but the hotel makes it!!

Room tip: High floor with a sea view

We came for the first time to Madeira, first time in Funchal and naturally first time in Hotel Baia Azul. Our decision was dead right.
After taking our rental car at the airport it took us about 20 minutes to arrive in Funchal at the hotel entrance. The lobby was spacious and well designed. There was a friendly welcome at the reception with the traditional Madeira wine. We were offered a quiet room on the 9th floor with direct view on the sea. The shape of our room was an irregular hexagon with sliding door to the small balcony. The floor in room was of wood and that in the bathroom of tiles, both hygienic and easy to clean. The interior design and the furnishing were simple, but well suiting our demands. There was a large king’s bed with bedside table on each side, a small round table with two fauteuils and a large glass table with a refrigerator beneath. In the corridor were three integrated wardrobes with enough space for our clothes. The only thing we missed was one or two coat hooks outside the wardrobes. In the room was also the safe box and a flat TV set on the wall. We have also appreciated the nice illumination of the room, partly with an indirect light.
The bathroom was also skilfully designed with shower, bidet, washbasin and toilet, it should have better ventilation.
Generally we were impressed by the cleanliness of the place.
The hotel offers SPA, Fitness room, two swimming pools, sauna and Turkish bath, two restaurants, bar in the lobby and at the outside pool. The hotel has its own garage from where you have direct access via the elevator to every floor and there is also access to every place for the wheel chairs.
We have missed nothing; it was a very nice stay in this hotel.

Room tip: Higher floors and rooms viewing the sea

Location is great with good views if you book a sea view room. Bedrooms light and spacious. Very annoying handles on wardrobe doors that clattered however carefully you closed them. Shower not very powerful, towels were a disgrace, very small and thin. Take your own if you want soft and large bath towels.
It rained most of the time we were there from 26th Feb - 12th March, so we did not use the outdoor pool, which was in a most attractive setting.
We were on B&B basis and tried the buffet one night at 22 euros, not very impressed with the food quality so did not bother again. Tried the a la carte restaurant which was a bit better. We paid 24 euros for a safe which I think is disgusting in a 4 star hotel.
The evening entertainment consisted largely of very loud music during which you could not hold a conversation. The seating in the lounge and reception area is very low and most uncomfortable. Bearing in mind the vast number of visitors to Madeira are in the elderly bracket, some consideration might have been given to providing more comfortable seating.
Staff on reception were very friendly and helpful.

Room tip: Always book a sea view room.
