The hotel is badged as 5* but it in reality it is. 4* hotel. We booked a junior suite which was a good size, however the beds were very hard and the balcony rather smaller than we would have expected given we paid for a suite. The separate shower in the bathroom was welcome but we had a dreadful view overlooking another high rise hotel which cut our Mountain View’s into two. The gardens need some more care and attention in part as well, there is a broken old fountain in one corner leaving this part of the garden Loki h uncared for and unloved. The gardens are much also smaller than the hotel website would leave you to believe. The website gives a much more positive view of the hotel than its reality, unfortunately. Staff are well trained and attentive and housekeeping are excellent, our beds were turned down each night and everywhere is very clean however we were disappointed not to have received a small gift in our room, something which we would have expected in a suite. The hotel is based in a very built up residential area which was noisy with traffic, building work and incessant barking dogs so not it racing at all restful sitting on our balcony. The spa is rather limited and you pay to use its facilities not just for treatments which was a surprise and disappointing, both pools are small too. The food is fine - we were half board but the set menu on half board is again very limited so do ask to choose dishes from the al la carte menu. The weekly gala dinner is a rather odd picnic arrangement in the scruffier part of the garden, and as guests on half board we had no choice but to take part in it. The weather was hot, warmer than average and the humidity high which means that 77degrees fells like 88degrees and a number of guests had been bitten by mosquitoes. Guests are drawn from the UK, France, Germany and Switzerland and there were few young children the hotel being much more suited to older adults. Madeira of course has an abundance of hotels including other quinthas so do look around would be our advice at alternatives before settling on this one.
