We have visited this hotel on several occasions. The hotel and grounds are great, so well looked after, but it is the staff that make the real difference. We are made to feel so welcome and that nothing is too much trouble. Everything is set up to be relaxing with non fussed elegance.
If you want to be next to the ocean, then sure, stay somewhere else.
But if you want to stay in a magical botanical garden mixed with a forest mixed with a gourmet restaurant and spa, you've found your place. The entire property feels like a refreshing nature oasis on the top of a mountain where you can relax, swim, stretch, walk around, eat, and drink to your heart's content.
My only recommendation is that you rent a car, because the Hotel is far enough away from Funchal that it can be annoying to explore the island without one.

Very nice staff and good simple food at lunch. Everything was excellent, although the swimming pool is not heated, as was advertised.

Set high above Funchal, with beautiful gardens, golf course and stunning views of the city.

Nothing too much trouble. Food was outstanding every evening.

Wine tasting and other activities laid on, free bus into the city every day.
