Good location, near Funchal, on the beach

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Dec 25, 2015
I have rented twice a fully furnished privately owned apartment in this building, that I found via an internet link for holiday rentals. Therefore, each has a different decoration and furniture, mine was excellent, about 120 m2. The location is an excellent compromise: near Funchal but away from its noise and on the Praia Formosa. Bus connection to Funchal and Aerobus. Free parking available. The building is well maintained, swimming pool with sunbeds and private access to the ocean. There is a coastal pedesrtian walk, on which there are 3 bar restaurants: this walk, westwise, takes you to Camara de Lobos, a nice fishing town, and eastwise to the hotel area till Funchal. There is a reception. Take the walk east and you have a big supermarket. All appartments face the ocean, all with big terraces and one never gets tired of the sunsets! No noise except that of the waves!

We booked apartment 803 through Owners Direct but our experience was very different to the earlier reviewer's. No issues with security and all recliners appeared new. Nothing broken. The apartment is the pent house on the 8th floor and is well located with outstanding views over the ocean. It was a spacious and comfortable apartment. True, it doesn't have air con but being Madeira (doesn't go above 27 even in summer) and being directly by the ocean meant we had a cool breeze and it was never a problem. The pool on first appearance looked a bit tired but is cleaned every day and actually was great and a hit with the kids. Staff are very helpful if you need anything. You can get access from the pool direct to the beach. Niara, who manages the apartment, is helpfulness itself. Recommending restaurants, jeep safaris and levada walks. She was happy to arrange bookings for us - at preferential rates. She made the holiday relaxing and enjoyable. Highly Recommend!

We booked to stay here as we had arranged our flights separately and we were looking for accommodation in the Lido area of Funchal for 5 of us. Having stayed before we knew what we were after and so chose to book in this way. We stayed for 10 days. The apartment was privately owned and the agreement was made and paid for in advance. When we arrived at the airport we were met by a British man who was our contact should we need anything during our stay. He had organised our private transfer and off we went to the apartment. Very organised and not at all stressful- very important when taking a holiday I think! It was located a little further out that we were expecting but this didn't pose too much of a problem as we were renting a car. It is definitely not in walking distance of the Lido area restaurants so a taxi would be needed if you want to enjoy a drink or are not renting a car. The lady on arrival was friendly and helpful and was there nearly all the time. Although this is no longer a managed hotel there is always a staff member on reception from the adjacent pestana hotel. Some apartments are used as homes for local residents and others are purely for holiday rentals. Our room was on the second floor and was very generous in size. Located on the seafront it had excellent views and we often enjoyed the sound of the ocean sitting on the balcony. The apartment included 2 sofas, dining table, breakfast bar, a TV with many channels and free wifi. Our bedroom had an ensuite which was larger than the separate bathroom and there was a small bedroom attached to ours with bunk beds- perfect for young families! Our bedroom was huge with a king size bed (probably bigger), built in wardrobes with lots of hangers and 3 sets of drawers. The twin bedroom also had built in wardrobes. Kitchen was fully equipped with pots, pans, plates etc and utensils. Iron and board available and lots of fans to use. The balcony was large enough for 2 sun loungers and a table with 6 chairs! Lots of brochures for activities and contact numbers if we wanted to book. A few books of handwritten reviews from previous guests of this apartment but nothing dated after 2012 which I found odd. Unfortunately after we had loaded the fridge and cupboards with food we discovered a rife problem with ants! The lady on reception said she couldn't do anything and to speak to the liaison contact. The fridge was also very poor at chilling items, drinks were barely cool and cheese went soft! The towels provided in the bathrooms were threadbare and smelled of damp. However all other aspects were good. The large pool area was okay but in the shallow end on the steps there was a missing tile with very sharp edges which I was concerned about my 4 year old cutting her foot on. There was a large sign above the outside pool bar area but it was not in use while we were there which was a shame but there was instead a vending machine available on reception. This may have been because of the time of year we visited, perhaps this opens when even warmer in June? Large parking area out front meant we always had a place to park our car which was handy. I personally wouldn't stay here again mainly due to the location being further away than we had realised but this was our mistake not theirs. It is actually in Praia Formosa not Lido, Funchal. If you are looking for a quiet location with one or two bars and snack places with lots of opportunity to go on scenic, relaxing walks then this is the place for you.

Our Aparthotel rooms Started off well, having plenty of space for us 3 adults. Has large outside patio plus roof patio. Except the plastic loungers were all broken. When we had a typical Madeira short downpour the outside patio flooded as the drains were blocked. Never mind we said, we are on holiday. But after a couple of nights we awoke in the morning to discover we had suffered a burglary! Camera, wallet, iPad, cash ... It later transpired that there had been burglaries a couple of days earlier on the first floor, followed by our event which also included one on the 4th floor. The hotel security handled the situation brilliantly and the local police were very good, too. After some 8 weeks we have not heard anything from the police, so we have no idea if any goods will be returned. We love Madeira, but not in this Aparthotel.

Room tip: 8th floor is magnificent, except that the burglar can scale the OUTSIDE (seen on security camera)

The views and the food here are absolutely stunning. The service is impeccable. Certainly a place to visit if you're staying in Funchal. We came across this place by accident when we decided to walk down a cobbled road. At the end of the road the view that we found was so beautiful we just had to stop for lunch! We were certainly glad that we did because it's by far the best food that we've had in Madeira all week.
