A must see. We paid for the grounds only as we find wandering around 'stately rooms' a bit boring. However the grounds only ticket allows full access to the castle terraces that circle the full palace and offer amazing views over all the Sintra attractions and surrounding countryside. The palace is stunning, don't forget your camera, it's like a fairy-tale castle. Unless your mobility isn't too good, don't waste time queuing for the bus once inside the grounds, it's a very nice walk through attractive grounds with good views.

This Palace is incredibly beautiful from the outside and has some amazing views. Unfortunately, on Easter Sunday it was incredibly crowded. There were long lines for tickets, lines to get into the palace grounds, and the lines to inter the interior. Once entering the interior, the line did not stop. It was slow moving through each room, and if you have seen other palaces in Europe, there is not much different to see here. Be prepared for lots of hills and stairs. I really wanted to love this, but was most impressed by the exterior. Perhaps the experience would have been better on a less busy day, but I'm not sure when those exist!

We visited the day before Easter, which apparently was a mistake. Our drive grew up in Sintra and told us he had never seen crowds the size they were that day in his 30+ years of living. The outside of the palace and the park grounds were absolutely gorgeous and not to be missed! We didn't make it inside, even though we purchased an advance ticket, were insane. It was not worth it to us.

We took the train from Lisbon to Sintra. It departs Lisbon from the Rossio train station. It is so easy to do and trains go every hour. Sintra is a delightful town that lies 25 km to the west of Lisbon and makes for a popular day trip from the capital. The tourist bus 434 provides an invaluable service as it connects the train station, town centre and Pena Palace. The bus performs the one directional loop starting with the train station, then passing through the town before climbing the hills to the Moors. The Pena Palace was designed by the artistic King Fernando II and the palace is an extravagant mixture of vivid colours and fine stone carvings. The interior has been retained to how it was when the monarchy fled Portugal in 1910 and is just as interesting as the exterior. The Pena Palace is the best of the three attractions visited in the day.

We took the train from Lisbon Rossio station towards Sintra. We had a Lisboa card, it also works on this route.
From train station you could take bus 434 to take you uphill to all the sights. €6,90 per person return.
If you easy get carsick, take your pills.

The parque and Palácio da Peña costs €14 per person, with the Lisboa card you will get 10% discount. The transfer bus who will take you uphill costs €3 p.p.

Very beautifull parque and palace. Colorfull, breathtaking view over the valley and inside you could see all the rooms.
