“Picturesque ancient square”
Review of Praca Oito de Maio

What is great about this square is its authentic character: the buildings are old and not yet refurbished so the facades look antique. The Santa Cruz church itself has a manueline beautiful portal, partly crumbling but authentically ancient.

This square leads to many places of interest. The Santa Cruz Church is here and beside it the Santa Cruz cafe. From here you can go to the beautiful University of Coimbra, the Botanical Gardens and much more. The Baixa is adjacent to the square, a labyrinth with many shops and truly Portuguese. Of course there are lots of great restaurants nearby. For me this is a great place to start exploring Coimbra.

A very nice square where most people turn back and head to the Church of Santiago and the Back breaker walk to the old cathedral. You can go around the back of the Santa Cruz church to see an unusual multi-domed and yellow gazebo.

At the end of a very nice and touristic street, you will find this lovely square where you can see a lots of people gathering and passing by. After seeing the church and a couple of boutiques, we took the road back through the down side on the way of commerce square with the small streets so try to enjoy as much as you can specially if you have a sunny day.

A must see, of course! Santa Cruz Church, Monastery and Santa Cruz cafe in the very same building as the Monastery- Schedule yours visit in between the Masses: you need access from inside the church to visit the points of interest.
