Known for it "stew", Furnas has a great local cuisine where they cook their stew in the ground by the thermal hot springs. Wonderful dinner and much to see in the town.

Hot springs, hot tubs, lots of sights to walk around. We visited the hot springs area and saw the food being prepared at the beach on the lake cooking in the dirt using only the volcanic heat. We later enjoyed our lunch at Tony’s eating the food we had seen being cooked, Had a relaxation time in hot tubs after our meals. Very relaxing and worth the full day visit.
And we skipped the gardens to give us more time to wander on our own

This is a very tourist oriented town with lots of attractions. Stop at the Pico for a great view and don’t miss the gardens and the caldeira.

Furnas is a lovely town. I stayed in an airbnb house with a garden, free herbs for cooking and free fruit to eat.
The main draw of Furnas is the Poco do Beija thermal springs and the Lagoa das Furnas and the cozido das furans steamed food.
But there's the Pico do Ferro viewpoint for panoramic views of the area. There's the Miradouro Lombo Dos Milhos which is a great little viewpoint overlooking the town which will help you get your bearings.
Tony's Restaurant is excellent for the cozido in the evenings and if you want a slightly more expensive meal out in Furnas, there's always the great food at Banhos Ferreos.
The various routs to the northern coast, Ribiera Quente, Provencao and Ponta Delgado are all lined with hydrangeas and are very picturesque roads to drive through.
