Absolutely perfect, everything we hoped for everything was clean and tidy lovely pools breakfast was great and above all that the people in reception were constantly available, helpful and friendly. Would definitely return. Also close enough to old town without being in the centre of it. Very popular with kids however , almost always children running round pool and diving and screaming babies so would maybe think adults only In future but that's not the hotels problem.

The decor is a little dated but don’t let this put you off its very clean. The staff are friendly and the food is great. A lot of choices with freshly cooked bbq food, salads and local cuisine. It’s really close to a sandy beach and everything you need is to hand. Great pools family and couple friendly. If I was Uber picky the towels could be softer and not sure why they are coloured and not white.

stayed there last week, mid July. lovely clean hotel in a good location: 5 minute walk to beach, 2 minute walk to supermarket and tourist office, plenty of good restaurants within 10-15 minutes walk in either direction of hotel, and new/old towns within a (5-8 euro) 10 minute taxi ride. new town mostly consists of bars and nightclubs with some restaurants- like being on a strip at a holiday resort, mostly aimed at young British people. old town more rustic with cobbled stone floors, tacky tourist shops, plenty of bars and restaurants and more local people- who seem to avoid new town. both worth a visit. faro 45-50 minutes away, Lisbon 2.5 hours away.

stayed in a double room, was pretty basic but had a fantastic balcony- really big with table and chairs and two sun loungers, half in shade and half in the sun. only fault was that there was quite a low wall between each balcony so not much privacy if you're sitting in the bottom half. cleaners came every day with clean towels and to empty bins.

went half board and the food was excellent, both in the morning and in the evening. plenty of choice at the buffet, with some Portuguese choices and also things like chips and pasta for fussier eaters. different menu every night and good fast table service for drinks from the bar. was nice to have the option of eating outside.

pool was pretty big, we visited outside of school holidays but was fairly easy to get a lounger at any time of day- if it did get busy there was an upper level of sun beds by the main pool and a second pool with an outdoor bar. water was freezing which was perfect for the hot weather. hotel also has a games room, with a few pool tables and another bar, open 6/7pm until midnight/1am. It got fairly noisy at night, but may have only been audible from our room because we were at the top of the stairs.

would definitely recommend balata mar, and Albufeira in general. very nice atmosphere and facilities and all staff, in reception, bar/restaurant and cleaners, very polite and helpful

After reading a great deal of positive reviews me and the missus decided to take a punt on the Balaia Mar. We took our 18year old son and his mate so they could entertain themselves and leave us oldsters to revel in the sunshine. On arrival we were booked in by the very friendly reception staff and showed to our room, which was spacious, air conditioned and spotlessly clean. We also had a small private balcony with two sun loungers on. We chose to go "all inclusive" and boy was it worth it. The food was really, really nice with plenty of variety with fish, meat and chefs specials, changing daily. All unbranded spirits and lagers were included but cocktails, ciders and branded spirits eg grey goose were reasonably priced. We had breakfast by the pool, then lunch, then snacks, then dinner, it just kept coming. It was fantastic and made even better by the friendly and attentive staff. Special mention has to go to Carlos who was fantastic throughout our week and even joined us for a few games of pool in the Sports Bar after work. His valuable tips and polite and professional manner really made our week.
I have a few tips myself for those about to, or thinking about visiting. Firstly AVOID NEW TOWN! It's hideous unless your a 20ish year old alcoholic idiot. With a special mention to Wild and Co, who served us the worst, hideously overpriced meal I've had for a long time. You must however, visit old town (15 mins cab ride, 8ish Euros, any more your being taken "round the houses") this is like a lighter version of new town, plenty of bars, restaurants, souvenir shops, local stalls and street entertainers. My son and his mate paid 15 euros each for a caricature portrait both of which were brilliant. Also if you are in the mood for a truly excellent tattoo visit Lucky 13 Tattoo Studio and ask for Iuri (pronounced Yuri). He did me a fantastic piece, over 4 1/2 hours of pain, but well worth the end product, this fella has a true gift. Back to the hotel, visit reception for a shelf full of excursions on offer. We chose to go to "Aquashow" water park which was priced at 39 Euros per person inc. bus there and back (tip! a taxi cost 40 Euros for all four of us, so we paid 29 Euros each and got an air conditioned, no stopping cab, much better. A great day out for all with plenty enough rides to make a day of it, also you can have your photos taken with such things as a python, golden eagle, eagle eared owls, parrots and bearded dragons.
My review is slightly biased, if I could give 4.5 stars I would. The hotel, staff, location were all excellent my only gripe and it really is subjective, is that its so quiet! No "around the pool" music, no music in the sports bar and no evening entertainment forcing us to go to old town most nights. This maybe a plus for some people, but I thought it worth including.
All in all though a truly brilliant, family friendly hotel with excellent facilities, polite and helpful staff, lovely location, go there, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Oh and don't forget the nearby beach (about 10min walk) with pedalos, jet-skis and sun loungers all available to hire.
