Had a great visit, lots of interesting facts about mining and well presented by ex miners, good facilities and reasonable prices for food and drink, children over 5 only and some low ceilings if you have any back issues like me but I coped with it and glad I did

We underestimated the amount of time we needed to spend here and left when it closed having not done half the site!!!
There was an amazing underground tour involving a lift descent and a scrabble around an actual mine. It had been very well thought out the kids loved the opportunity to scrabble around on the floor in the dark and crawl through tunnels! Eric the guide was fantastic and especially great with my daughter who has learning difficulties. Beware, he loves throwing rats and mice around!!! We came away with a much wider understanding of the lost world of the miner and a huge respect for the hardships and dangerous their lives were.
All sorts of unusual bits and pieces - the mine escape pod lorry being particularly chilling! We enjoyed the museums and the lady being the miners wife and her little show!
Free parking and it was only £4 to get in - we were given a token that we could use to go underground again if we came back. £1.50 on the little train was good fun. We missed the blacksmith as we were elsewhere when the demonstration was on.so pick your time!! Great playground that we struggled to get the kids off!! Really great day out need at least 4 hours. The Yorkshire sculpture park is very close to fill in the rest of your day!!!!!

Had a really lovely day here. I loved the fact that it was free but donations are welcome. Great outdoors play area if you get the weather. Just overpriced shop and cafe.

Visited about 25 years ago with school so thought I'd bring my wife and son for a visit. The underground tour was brilliant, my son loved it, and our tour guide Taz was fantastic. The above ground attractions were well presented and engaging. The food we had in the cafe didn't disappoint either and was some lovely home cooked grub!
Overall a fantastic place and a fitting tribute to an industry that was lost too soon.

A fantastic day out for all the family, all brought to life by the wonderful guides who are as entertaining as they are informative. Our underground guide, Een, was totally brilliant. He shared his years of experience of working in the mines in such an engaging and humorous way. The kids loved every minute. Also a great cafe, shop and outdoor play areas.
