We really just went through as we were "geocaching". It is a different experience to descend with either the lift or escalator and then to walk under the river. We then had a lovely walk on the other side and saw a completely different side of Antwerp.

We took the free ferry from one aide of the river, walked through the park and went into the tunnel building. The noise of the escalators hit you first, followed by the smell of warm lubricating oil then when you see these magnificent staircases you are blown away that they have survived so long. Even the handrails have cleaning brushes at either end and the wooden treads are well maintained. Down two levels to walk through the clean bright tunnel. It was a real pleasure. The lift comes down to Level -31 but the draw of the escalators was too strong. Many push bikes use the lift but they also fit on the wonderfully proportioned staircases.
Highly recommend doing this round trip.

Yes, it's only a tunnel that I admit I didn't walk through to get to the other side of the river. To me, the surprise was the 1930s wooden escalator. There is an elevator for those with bikes.

St Anna´s Tunnel let you cross, by foot or by bike, under the river, to the other side of the city. Is free, good light all over and beautiful wooden escalators. The lifts, make it suitable, also, for people with baby strollers or wheelchairs.

St Anna's Tunnel is a fantastic pedestrians tunnel running under the river.
It's spotlessly clean and very well maintained and although predominantly a pedestrians tunnel cyclists are permitted and it's a nice experience walking the 500 metres plus walkway and catch a ride back on the free ferry.
Well worth checking out.

Thank Neil K
