Despite the rain, my visit to Zaanse Schans in mid February was fantastic! Zaanse Schans is a must in order to get acquainted with the country's culture and history.

We enjoyed our time here, as there is a lot to see and do. The Pancakes were amazing too! We enjoyed climbing through the windmill, and the view from there was amazing. Wish we had a few more hours there, as we didn't get to the museum or cheese tasting as they closed promptly at 5

When we decided to visit Amsterdam I was determined I must see windmills & this place didn't disappoint!
Approx 20 minutes train ride from Amsterdam Centraal station, €3 return, followed by 10-15 minute walk to the village. Free entry to walk around but some of the attractions charge €4.50 to get in, which could be quite costly for a family if you wanted to see everything. We walked along all the routes & took in the views of the beautiful windmills & surrounding areas; we paid to go into 1 of the mills to see them in action & weren't disappointed. Plenty of little shops selling all sorts of souvenirs & wares made by the mills; ensure to take plenty of cash because some of them do not accept cards & we found this out the hard way at dinnertime when we had spent up & couldn't use our card in the bakery and, when we found the atm it was out of order! Luckily there was a lovely little tavern where we had soup, sandwiches & drinks for less than €20. Overall a very lovely place & best to visit on a nice day, which it was for us. I would definitely go back.

We took a train for less than 20 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station to Zaanse Schans. From train station, we walk a short distance to reach a bridge. From the bridge, we can have a Panoramic view of all the windmills along the river on the right side while the houses on the left side of the river. We walk along the path beside the river, and will pass several working windmills. Some windmills are working workshops for timber, soya oil and others. We can visit this working windmills by paying an entrance fee. The scenery of the windmills along the river is simply spectacular and beautiful. We can keep admiring this beauty while taking a slow stroll along the footpath. We can also visit a Cheese making factory and a Clog making shop. This is definitely a fantastic area to take some very scenic photos. We should visit this place since it is so near to Amsterdam.

This is a great way to see some windmills (most were relocated here) and to learn about how they function. Our guide told us to beware of pickpockets while here-- but it wasn't too crowded since it was the end of the day. There is a great bakery and gift shop (with really good hot chocolate and almond cookies). Worth paying to go into one of the windmills to have a a look and learn more.
