Great old established but nicely refurbished hotel with a fabulous location. It has has a relaxed boutique feel we very much liked and is not that large. Our double-bed guestroom was a good size and the bed comfortable. Ask for a double not a twin when you book. It was a nice minimal contemporary design with some of the original features including the staircase. Our first floor guestroom had a wide balcony suitable for 3 to sit overlooking the Rhein across which sat the old city and its cathedral. Lovely spot which was also so convenient to get to the old city just across the bridge. I suspect better views than form the Three Kings across the road at a fraction of the price.

The Bathroom was efficient and functionally designed and fitted out. Not sure of the quality of the fittings particularly the shower which needed effort to set at correct temperature. Is it thermostatic as temperature did vary during shower? Did not like dispenser bottle shampoo and liquid soap. Indicates cost cutting which should not be seen in a hotel of this quality.

There was a very efficient double glazing for a good night's sleep though we were unaware of any air-conditioning and the room was quite stuffy requiring us to open the sliding door slightly. The Rhein-side walk we overlooked was a hive of activity during the day and the evening but quiet descended way before we were ready to sleep so no problems with noise. The rooms at the back overlook a busy street with many bars and restaurants so I suspect it is noisy. Pay that little extra for a Rhein view. You won't regret it. Also balcony room slightly smaller but what a pleasure to sit out looking over the Rhein

Service is minimal but available if you needed it. Lugging heavy luggage up the steps on arrival was not fun and when we checked in we were shown to the small lift and given directions to our room. If you want overwhelming service this is not the hotel for you but it was very much to our taste.

The lounge was for us not that attractive a room and needs an interior revamp to give it a little more glamour. We didn't need to use it so no problem for us and most people would want to go down and sit in one of the many bars overlooking the Rhine including the hotel's own.

The restaurant on the ground floor overlooking the Rhein below is a large elegant, white painted room which was a superb setting for a meal. it has a reputation as one of the places to eat in Basel and we were not disappointed. The breakfast was good in a Swiss minimalist way (do not expect anything like a cooked breakfast). Again in line with its relaxed boutique feel, staff sat at a table in the corner eating their breakfast which was the same as ours except their juice glass was much larger! No real problem as the view out of the windows drew your eyes away.

Altogether a wonderful Hotel and we will return.

Room Tip: Pay little extra for a Rhein view. You won't regret it. Balcony room slightly smaller but what a pleasure to sit overlooking the Rhein

Dear "FoodieArch",
Wow - thank you so much! We appreciate you took the time to post such a detailed review. Besides the fact that the overall experience was good, we kindly wish to get back to the following points:
- we will check about the shower - thank you!
- dispenser for shampoo/soap/bodylotion, no cost cutting at all, we are just considering the environmental aspect. Also, these are high quality products (Occitaine)
- we do indeed not have air-conditioning, unfortunately, we are not allowed to due to safety reason as we are a historic house.
- last but not least: we do give larger glasses gladly if that is requested. :)
We are looking forward to your return and wish you a wonderful day!
Best regards,
Barbara Sutter

Stayed only a couple of days, which haven been enjoyed to the fullest. What a beautiful, charismatic hotel! We arrived later in the evening and were welcomed with open fire, lovely atmosphere and many classic features (ceilings, stairs). Spacious practical room, well designed and large modern bathroom. Comfortable terrace with breath taking Rhein view (take note not all rooms are Rhein view). Coffe, tea and fresh fruit available from pantry on every floor. Varied breakfast buffet. Ideally and central situated. Will most certainly come back when in Basel!

This beautiful old hotel has good sized rooms that are tastefully furnished. It has character and is a nice change from some of the traditional chains in Basel. It doesn't have a desk, but good sofa and small table were fine for working on. L'Occitane toilietries in room and water available on tap in each landing area, along with a range of leaf teas that you can make yourself. Very friendly staff and lovely river views. Only downside was not that much choice for breakfast, which was surprising given the restaurant was excellent for dinner.

Room Tip: Choose a room by river, because Rheingasse has a number of bars and cafes which were quite noisy if you want to sleep with your window open!

We had a special celebration here with family and were very much looking forward to this special treat, having lunch at a recommended restaurant and in a beautiful dining room overlooking the rhine. But I have to say, the service was unfriendly and we didn't feel welcome. The 'pork steak' was quite dry, but the polenta was very fine. The surprise menu was also tasty, however the mix of vegetables with peas, carrots, asparagus and a few other was not so inspiring. The beaf steak with potato fritter looked quite unattractive...
Too bad that the deserts were also not so convincing, but most of all we were disappointed by not being treated like guests but rather like a disturbance.

Dear "jufo88"
Thank you for your honest words regarding your visit at our restaurant which we really appreciate. We sincerely do apologise for not having you made feel welcome and treatened friendly. This is absolutely not the way we would like to make our guests feel. We interact in a friendly, warm and authentic manner with our guests. Kindly accept also our apologies for the dry pork steak. This did obviously not meet our quality standards. We will check this case and solve it. The mix of vegetables though is always depending on the season and freshly prepared by our kitchen. May we kindly ask you what you experienced as "not so convincing" in case of the desserts? We would be pleased to receive some further details in order to improving on our quality.
We would be pleased to receive a second chance to welcome you again to our restaurant to prove that we can do better.
Kind Regards,
Your KRAFFT BASEL team

Hotel is located in the center of Basel near the University and on the Rhine river, and nearby to many cafes and restaurants. Hotel is relatively expensive as is everything in Basel and there is no hotel parking but there are 2 nearby (walking distance) 24 hr. garages - the hotel offers a discount at these garages. Rooms include free (good) WiFi but breakfast is an extra cost and frankly not worth it. Restaurant is also expensive but quite good with an exceptional international wine list - be prepared for a wait between courses. Good SMART (you can plug in a USB with movies and watch directly) TV with groups of channels in several languages including English

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view of the Rhine River and higher is better

Dear "Frank M",
Thank you for your review and details which may be very helpful for future guests.
We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. May we ask you what you missed at the breakfast buffet? Your feedback would be very much appreciated.
Regarding the wait between courses: we wish to give our guests the time to enjoy the culinary delights - we also do not like our guest to think we want them to hurry up. We can always adjust the speed though - please let us know that you prefer less time between the courses next time.
Thank you again and have a wonderful weekend,
Best regards,
Your Krafft Basel Team
