I would give 6 stars if I could. After getting ripped off in Florence's over priced tourist trap restaurants this was place was amazing. The variety of food is unbelievable great value and healthy. Lots of vegetarian and gluten free options and great value.

After living in Rome for a month, being spoiled for its fresh fruits and vegetables in Mercato di Testaccio and having indulged ourselves with various flavours of gelati in different Gelateria, Mercato Centrale Firenze (MFC) turned out to be a disappointment - a place that our first visit was once too much, we would never be back there to buy anything again.

Stalls for fruits and veggies were on Ground floor level. To buy certain types of fruits and veggies, unlike in any other fruit and vegetable market, here, you would probably not allowed to choose or pick the ones you like, the stall owners would choose those they want to sell you. But you could always say no and make them to choose a different one. Beware, the price could be higher while the quality could be lower than the supermarkets in Firenze city. (That was what we realised after we visited the supermarkets such as Conad and Carrefour). 2 Star rating for the fruit and veggie stalls.

I found the most attractive stalls were the ones selling salamis and dried mushrooms (also on Ground Floor). There were so many types of salamis! One stall displayed small cuts of different types for sampling, we sampled and bought some from the friendly lady there. For that stall (unfortunately I can’t remember it’s name now), I would give 4 Star rating.

Upstairs food court was very busy and very noisy at Saturday 12 noon. If you want to sit down and eat, you have to grab the seats and have someone of your group stay on guard.

1. The gelato was of very ordinary taste and as expensive as any Gelateria at tourists’ attractions. At about 12 O’clock Saturday, one female serving the queue of seven customers, and gave herself the permission to down grade my €6 “i magnifici” to a meagre €4 crêpe, which was disappointing because the only reason for me to order there was for their advertised “i magnifici” (see photo attached). Oh, well... I hope you have a better luck, if you order there.

2. IL Tartufo- specialised in making various dishes (pasta, risotto, sandwiches etc) with white or black truffle shavings. The food was delicious, but rather pricey. I bought a plate of pasta with black truffle (€25), and a truffle picker’s platter (€10). Having not been to any other truffle restaurant in Firenze, I could not know if it was good value. I definitely enjoyed the food. So 4 Star for the food, and 3 for value.

3. The €8 wood fire pizza my daughter ordered was delicious. The chefs were enthusiastic, but the cashier... again, didn’t seem to appreciate the job having to dealing with non-Italian speakers. So, focus on the food, all is well! 4 Star for food and value and 2 Star for the service.

In general, compare to the other eateries in Firenze, I wouldn’t recommend to eat at the food court because it was generally more pricey. But, tourists do what tourists do.

So this is one of those reviews that starts with its better than the score I gave it. It’s a good place and a great idea but not ‘very good’.
The market downstairs is more civilized than it used to be and that has followed through upstairs.
A great idea to have a mixture of restaurants above a market.
However, although it’s been done out really well I can’t help thinking it’s a bit mainstream.
In London we have Mercato Metropolitana which is a similar idea but opposite. A collection of artisan vendors in the middle of a massive city offering mainstream options. Likewise Borough Market.
Perhaps because there are so many authentic specialist providers in Florence they have purposely gone mainstream and aimed at a younger clientele.
Anyhow, we did manage to find the only fish restaurant which was decidedly average. Therefore, a bit disappointed. Decent value for money though.

This is a fun and vibrant food market, definitely worth checking out. Wonderful meat and produce vendors on the first floor, along with purveyors of cheese, spices, dried fruits, etc. Be sure to check out the food hall upstairs where there’s a wonderful selection of restaurants and a large bar. There’s even a cooking school upstairs. When I visited, there appeared to be plenty of locals there, as well.

Floor above the market. Loads of different places to eat. Great choice of food. Very busy and very popular. Well worth a visit.
