Granted, there are many restaurants here and a sort of market (from pasta to vegetables) under a roof, but the place was so packed, we had to find someplace quieter and more comfortable to eat. I can't understand why this is a big attraction.

Markets selling fresh, high quality ingredients are a staple of every European city, even small ones. This market is a bit different, in that all fresh food purveyors are on the main floor (open 0800 until about 1400), while there is a gourmet food court covering the entire upstairs (open 1000-0001, midnight every day). Food on main floor is inexpensive but food at the food court is more expensive.

Very friendly stall owners, many of whom speak English. Don't miss the pasta maker! We got a pound of fresh fettuccine for 4€, which they cut to order.

Hint, the toilet on second floor is free, the one on the main floor of market cost 1€.

Wonderful market, highly recommended!

We spent one afternoon and a couple of evenings at the Mercato Centrale and really regret that we didn't have any more free time to go back (we were kept really busy with tours). There are so many stalls (food, leather etc) and an amazing food area upstairs that has something for everyone. The best part of the upstairs eating area was that they offered bar service, so you were able to buy your food at one of the many counters (like any other food court) but they would bring you wine at your table!

Can't wait to go back to Florence

So many tourists must completely miss this. But if you love Italian food and cooking and want to get a more authentic experience of Florence and her locals go here - especially for the top floor food market which is open until late.

If you haven't been to a European market before, be sure to swing by this spot! Downstairs is full of vendors (with lots of meat) and the upstairs is full of different vendors for lunch/dinner. Find what your heart desires and eat away! There's also a culinary school to check out as well.
