We visited the uffizi on a very busy period just after easter, we took a guided tour of the gallery which I would recommend, with visit today Italy, although more exspensive it was a very good way to see and learn about the main pieces and then you have time after to go back around the gallery's.

5* rating based on buying the tickets on line before to avoid the worst of the queuing. We arrived at 9 am and were surprised at how you can wander around at leisure without being surrounded by hoards of other tourists. There is a lot to take in and after 2 hours I'd had enough of Renaissance art and classical sculpture. The art and long galleries were stunning.

We waited about 30 minutes to get in, which wasn't too bad. Great for the history buff or someone who loves museums... not really something I love, but I would recommend it.

We booked in advance and joined the queue for pre-booked entry. It looked very long but the wait was less than 10 minutes. If you book with discounts for children or students make sure they have valid ID (passport or driving licence). The building itself is almost as impressive as the 100+ rooms of Renaissance art. The long corridors give stunning views over the river. We didn’t take the audio guide (6€) but our guide book devoted a chapter to the highlights of this museum. We were pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t too crowded (4pm entry), particularly once we had navigated the first few rooms. A must see in Florence, we weren’t disappointed.

This is one of those overwhelming art galleries where there is too much too take in in one visit. We hired a private guide for the two of use and that really made the visit. We spent almost 4 hours with our guide, Gastone, and were never bored. We asked him to focus on the "best of Italy" and not only did he show us great art but he provided the historical and political context, which was invaluable to appreciating what was there. The Galleries have a roof top café (indoor & out) which is good place to take a break.
