Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

Just no way to see Venice without St Marc's.
But plan it well. It is almost always crowded. So it s good to get there at the morning to see Basilica, Dodge's Palace etc.
And problematic when raining...

Go early in the day to avoid crowds. Take water to drink and unless you have loads of money avoid the tat shops and the expensive food outlets

This is surely one of the most magnificent squares in the world--but also beware. The crowds are overwhelming; in high water it is flooded; the prices in the cafes are beyond belief. Come at mid-night or mid-winter on a Thursday. However, you can't miss it.

We were there over Easter when it was filled to the rim. A great place to stroll taking in the architecture, smells of all the good food, shops, and sounds.

Not far from the Rialto Bridge....shops and cafes along the way. It was beautiful to see and hear the church bells ring. Places to sit and eat. Shops around the square.
