What a lovely place, nice surrounds and music. Warm and friendly staff. Good service, with good wine recommendations. Live to go back

We happened upon this charming little place as we were wandering around Dorsoduro in Venice. We were ready for a very light lunch and this place fit the bill. There was a nice variety ready made sandwiches. We bought several and shared. They were all fresh and delicious. So for someone looking for a snack or a very light lunch, this is a great place to stop.

Osteria & Bar Ai Pugni, facing onto Canal San Barnaba at Ponte dei Pugni, is an authentic neighbourhood place with people spilling onto the narrow Fondamenta outside during the late afternoon “apperitivo” time. The place is filled with interesting characters, who clearly know one another, so there’s lots of energy, talking and laughter. As with all places in Italy now, it’s non-smoking inside. However, this is Italy after all, so the large window onto the street is open in good weather and the smokers go on the canal side of the open window, whilst the non-smokers are on the other side!

A good range of wines, spirits and cocktails are available, also coffee and they have a range of snacks such as the Venetian bar staple, tramezzini. It’s a fun place that should be on your list.

This was our second visit to Venice this year, and the Ai Pugni is still our favourite bar. At lunchtime, they have a couple of super pasta dishes, with panini and cichetti all day. But the real pleasure is the wide range of red wines to try. If it is quiet, you will get an enthusiastic chat while trying these. And do try the Amarone, well worth the couple of euros extra per generous glass.

We came across this place while on the way to the DaVinci exhibit at the San Barnaba di Venezia Church. The kids loved it! Great little snacks, delightful sandwiches and a wonderful wine selection, which was helpful at 15:30 and in 35 degree heat. All in all a fantastic find!
