We travelled widely on the ATM Tram system and Metro, but getting tram tickets is bizzarre, in that you need to get them from the Tabachi shops beforehand! And trying to get a map of the tram system - even from the tram company - hopeless!!
Get yourself a map from the internet and suddenly they are super way to travel around Milan!

We’re on Milan just now and using the all day metro ticket we have been able to travel all over the city on the Metro system and the trams. The old trams are a fun way to get about and see parts of the city that you wouldn’t normally travel through on a short break. €4.50 each from the Auto Ticket Machines (ATM) in the Metro stations gets you about both Metro and trams all day. The old trams are so stylish with shiny wooden benches.

My wife and I recently took a long weekend to Milan and I thought it a special treat to try the Tram Turistico. Well, not only could we not find where to board this tram but we were also directed to different locations, even by the Tourist Information Centre, some of which were quite a distance apart, with the result that after two days, we only ended up getting on board a 'standard route' tram that took us from Central Station area to the Duomo. Fankly, Trip Advisor could have explained more and given details of where exactly to board the tram. I'm only glad that I didn't pre-pay for this event.

The old orange wooden trams are a great way to see this large and very attractive city. The trams still operate a number of routes, we sampled the 1 and 10. The opportunity to have the windows open and to take pictures as you travel is to good to miss. The 2 and 3 day travel passes are such great value that it's very easy to see all of the city for very little.

One of the best ways to see Milan. The best antiquated looking streetcar system outside of San Francisco and Lisbon. Don't ride it if you are in a rush however.
