This piazza is surrounded by shops, cafes, eateries - It has a fun energy about it. Early morning coffee here is nice, but it would get too crowded at times, so we had espressos on the out skirts of the piazza. Our photos of both early morning and late night of the piazza and Neptune fountain look fantastic!

A lovely square to sit in and watch the world go buy. A bit of a shame there aren't more cafes but I suppose that keeps the square very open as a result.

Bologna is a small city with lots of character and history. Easily on one day you can walk it, feel it and enjoy its architecture. Piazza Maggiore is know simply as "piazza" for the locals and is full of energy and people enjoying it.

Okay, it's a large open square where locals and tourists congregate. Yes, it is pretty and there is an interesting fountain featuring Neptune (although we think technically this is in another connected square, but it's all one big space), but still is just a town square. There are several restaurants and open air cafes, but we must be the invisible man as we could never get a server to actually acknowledge our presence, so finally ended up eating at the McDonalds at the edge of the square over by the Neptune statue (after a couple weeks on the road, it was actually a nice reminder of home). This was actually serendipitous as next to the McDonalds is a taxi stand which was very convenient as we could get a cab ride back to the hotel out at the outskirts of town that our company booked us into.

I visited the Piazza Maggiore with friends and business colleagues two evening in a row, one of them bring St Patrick’s Day. We had two wonderful evenings with delicious food and abundant alcohol. I consider the bars and restaurants in, and around, the Piazza Maggiore to be among the best that can be found in Italy.

During one of the days, I strolled around the square and took in the impressive architecture. I also sat at a table outside one of the bars and enjoyed a strong coffee and pastry and soaked up the atmosphere.

If you are in Bologna then a visit to the Piazza Maggiore is something that you mustn’t miss.
