The coliseum opens at 8:30. If you have a guide you get in after waiting in a small line. Your guide should buy the tickets before you get there. They only let so many people in then the gates are closed. They wait until everyone is out and allow the next group of people in. There are a few signs to read but the guide can give you so much more. Alessandro Calì. Was our guide and he was also an archaeologist. It was $70. An hour but it was worth every penny. His company name is Eyes of Rome. His English was excellent. We went to all three levels and sub level where there were gladiators, animals and slaves. Without a guide you won’t know this. He also showed us how the covering went over the top through a pulley system again you need a good guide. If you are going here once in your life get a guide or you will miss out on so much interesting facts over the centuries.

We purchased skip the line tickets that included the Colosseum arena floor and underground tunnels. This enabled us to skip the very long queues and once inside we were met by our guide. She was knowledgeable and helpful on our tour of the Colosseum pointing out different features and explaining about some of the myths about what actually happened within the arena.
The ticket also included the Forum and Palatine Hill and this tour was conducted by another lady who was again very knowledgeable. She explained how Rome was built up and how the forum was developed and pointed out different structures and what they were. All together it was a good tour without all the waiting for hours in queues.

We went in the queue at around 8:20am with pre-booked online tickets. The pre-booked print at home ticket queue was rather short compared to non-ticket holder. We were in there before 9am.
So it's definitely worth being there early and paid the extra 2 Euro for the online booking fee.

Upon entering, we were overwhelmed with the history of the Colisseum. We had the good fortune of having an exceptional guide which contributed greatly to the overall experience. Go very early as it gets crowded quickly and stays that way.
