This was our first trip to Italy and we loved it. Location of the hotel was perfect for us as we like peace and quiet, excursions, nice meals and early nights.
The free shuttle bus was always on time, very reliable, and essential as a taxi to Sorrento and back again is about 60 euro and without this you would be confined to the hotel as the roads are dangerous to walk along and you are up in the hills so no shops close by.
It is well worth the bus trip for the peaceful location and beautiful views Hotel La Vue D'Or offers. We would have disliked staying down in Sorrento town, as it was very busy and too noisy (car horns beeping constantly).
We couldn't get a room with a sea view on booking but we were happy with our view on arrival as it was tranquil and relaxing facing the hills. The room was clean and was attended to by a maid service every day. The hotel staff were very helpful, bar staff always happy and waiter service was most enjoyable both morning and night. Despite having to repeat themselves constantly, rush around, (and put up with some demanding guests) the staff always had a smile on their face and were attentive, warm and welcoming to everyone and a few guests told us they had been returning for years as they loved it so much.

Room was adequate size and balcony was large and perfect for relaxing in the sun, or sitting with a drink in the evenings. The bathroom and shower clean and good size, and the hairdryer was powerful compared to others I've experienced. My only complaint would be that there was no fridge in the room, so no ice cold drinks unless you go to the bar which has limited choice.
We ate at the hotel three times for evening meals as we wanted to experience many different restaurants in Sorrento, Ristorante O'Parruchiano being our favourite, (book a garden table under the lemon trees in the evenings) or Café Latino is also a gem, but the food at the hotel was nice, and much better than some of the restaurants we experienced in Sorrento. The choice was 3 courses, 3 options, we are vegetarians and there was always an something suitable for us, with large portions, and the staff made it extra special with friendly service. I heard mixed views about the food, but I think for the price we paid half board it was exceptionally good value, if you want top quality you have to pay the price, (some people want 5 star quality for 3 star price).
Excursions: We visited Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Capri and Anacapri, Amalfi, Ravello, Positano and Naples and we enjoyed them all. We booked two of these trips via the hotel, which were cheaper than the rest and all picked us up directly from the hotel.
Pompeii seemed too rushed with a guide and we felt we should have done a full day, independently to make the most of it as there was more to see.
Amalfi coast is not to be missed!!!! The most beautiful place I have visited so far, and if you get the opportunity to also view it by boat, then please do so.
Vesuvius is also a great experience if you are able to walk to the top as the views are spectacular.
Our Thompsons rep (Bridget/Brigid) was lovely and really helpful, even when we had some bad news from home at the end of the trip she went out of her way to help us.
We like to gain different experiences so rarely go back to the same place more than twice but we will definitely be going back to La Vue D'Or as we enjoyed it so much.
If you like busy, bustling places, late nights or a five minute walk to your local bar/restaurant/shops, then this isn't the place for you. If your ideal is a quiet peaceful setting, slightly out of the way, with friendly staff, warm atmosphere and a good base to explore the surrounding areas then book La Vue D'Or. It was exceptional value for money and we will definitely be going back.More
