Toledo is an ancient city set on the hills, and a UNESCO listed city for its co-existence of Christians, Muslims and Jewish cultures.

It is possible to go on a day trip from Madrid, by joining some local day tour. Otherwise, it is possible to drive there in about an hour. If you choose to take the high speed train, it will only be half an hour.

Give yourself about three hours to go for a walk in this old town, with its majestic Toledo Cathedral.

Dont forget to take in the View Point from across the River. The best view point is called Mirador del Valle, and it is best to go in the dusk or at night when the city is illuminated.

When i first saw the picture of Toledo from this specific view point, i was mesmerized by the beauty of this UNESCO city.

And my recommendation for you is to stay overnight, so that by the evening, most of the day trippers would have gone off. Then you could really take in the beauty of the place with less people around.

A must - visit place when you travel to Spain, and Madrid.

Toledo is the oldest city of Spain. The city is surrounded by an ancient wall, high on a hill. Each door you'll see as you pass through the narrow streets, is unique and will have some type of iron knocker/decor. See the swords-they are known to make the best. We bought iron door knockers and bells for about $15.
La Mancha is full of hills and we saw a few windmills. We stopped in a touristy Place where they process the saffron. There was a free museum in the gift shop that had original works of the story Don Quixote and Poncho. They are very popular all over Spain-statues in Madrid, etc...

Toledo is a wonderful city to visit. The old quarter is gorgeous with so many things to see. It has a nice feel when you wander around. You need decent walking shoes as it is very hilly and the streets are hard on your feet. There are Museums, Churches, former Synagogues, Monasteries, sword making.... something for everyone. I was there for 3 days and I saw a lot, a week would have allowed me to see everything I wanted to see with a degree of comfort.
If your planning a trip here make an itinerary as it is very easy to group things together. And if you're driving make sure your hotel has parking (Hotel Pintor El Greco is well situated with underground private parking 23€ per night, well worth it).

I had gone on a tour of Spain with a group of friends. From Madrid we went wth the group to Toledo, once the capital of Spain. Initially we went around on a walking tour in the old quaint city with narrow winding streets. Later we drove around the rest of the city in the coach. Finally we visited a factory where we were shown how swords were made by hand. I would suggest a visit to Toledo to anyone who goes to Madrid
