“Day trip from Algeciras...”

Reviewed 4 April 2018

I did a day trip from Algeciras having arrived from Morocco the day before. There are regular buses to La Linea (last stop before the Spanish-Gibraltar border) from Algeciras - duration maybe 20-30 mins. From the bus station in La Linea you can walk to and cross the border within 5 minutes. It's a bit of a thrill to walk across Gibraltar's runway. A further 20 minute walk and you're in downtown Gibraltar and can access a few entrances to the Rock of Gibraltar, a protected area that requires a small entrance fee. Lots of wartime attractions and of course the macaques (monkeys) at the top of the rock are entertaining. You can take driven tours of the rock if you wish, but I found it better to spent 4-5 hours walking around myself. Much better.

Accessed the rock via the cable car. Views across to Africa and Spain and also lots of shipping traffic seen from the top and whilst walking down. The monkeys actually seemed very subdued and the experience of them taking processions etc we never saw any of that.
To walk down and see everything took us about 4/5 hours in all.

Kept the whole family interested. Loads to see on the Rock- St Michael's cave, Apes Den, Windsor Bridge, Great Siege Tunnel, Moorish Castle, Military Centre, 100 Ton Gun etc. on the ticket (£10 pounds each) purchased at the Jews' Gate kiosk. We found the Taxi cost £25 pounds each too expensive (family of 4) for the 1-1 1/2 hour tour, but by walking we saw so much more and could enjoy each attraction in our own time. By doing it this way I think we must of walked about 10 miles, but luckily we enjoy walking!

The Gibraltar rock is outstanding, both from a far distance and on the top! We went on a guided tour in a small bus with a very nice Gibraltarian named George. We made 4 stops, to see Africa, a concert hall (!) inside the cliff, to meet the apes and to look down on the extremely small cars (we were really high up!). We also liked the city at the ground with shops and restaurants.

Tgere is only one Rock of Gibraltar! Great colonial location with a twist of Moor and Spanish as well as the obvious British Garrison.
