We arrived to pouring rain in Barcelona and once unpacked headed off to the Gothic Quarter for some shelter and Spanish food. After walking the backstreets, every restaurant looked a uninviting/touristy/empty. We just happened on this place (a doorway) it was packed with people and emanated a warm glow. We were welcomed in out of the rain and as two women on our own it was comforting to see mixed groups, not just couples. There was no pressure to order, so we took our time - a lovely start to the holiday. We shared their tomato, tahini and Arabic bread starter - delicious. The hot spinach and cheese sandwich made with the toasted flat bread was our main but one was enough for two as it was very filling. We felt rather conspicuous hitting the wine as everyone else appeared to be on tea, but everything about the place was relaxed and like being in someone's front room so the whole experience put us in the holiday mood. We returned 2 days later!

Many of the negative reviews of this spot mention complaints of “time”. If you are on a strict schedule, then skip this place. If your idea of a vacation is to relax and enjoy the moment, then this is an excellent and extremely unique experience.

Another little tapas bar we stumbled across one evening. Small, cosy and no doubt very popular and serving delicious food...vegetarian only!!
A good selection of tea and coffee and tempting dishes. Another tapas that we returned to before leaving the city.

We stumbled upon this historic little "cave in the wall" within the Barri Gotic, and waited to be seated in one of the most enchanting little restaurants in Spain. The atmosphere is warm and enticing, the staff exceptionally welcoming, and the vegan food (I'm a Carnivore), was exceptional! We feasted on abundant portions of something that I had never experienced before. Somewhat like a covered pizza or flatbread, STUFFED with a heavenly mushroom filling. While difficult to locate within the small winding streets, it is a must visit. Apparently the locals frequent Salterio as well. ENJOY!

Our hosts recommended Slaterio when we asked where we could eat something good that was not tapas.
We went to the place and had their vegetarian flatbread (sardo) and loved it so much we went back a few days later for more. A plate is about 10 Euros and one was enough for each of us.
Keep in mind that preparation of the food takes time since they make it once you order it, so make sure you are not starving when you walk in and that you have enough time.
