The cinema features typical design elements of the 50s which creates a special atmosphere. You can also book a tour on the website (German only, as far as I know) to go behind the scenes and find out about the cinema's history and technical details. Every Thursday a Jazz jam session takes place in the bar on the first floor. Really worth going there!
Mainly this is a cinema but there are theatre and concert performances, too. The historic building was opened in 1928. Today it still is the biggest film palace in Germany.
If you dislike US-american-style cinemas and prefer elegant and plush athmosphere like I do go and visit the place. The building houses two (one big and one small) halls. Therefore it obviously cannot offer such a huge selection of movies as Cinemax and Co. But the current top films are always shown here. Perhaps you even manage to see a premiere with many stars being present.
It is the cinema with the biggest screen - in the past as well as today many premiers take place here. Recently renovated, the architectural beauty and the charm remained, however more comfortable seats.
always we are very satisfied when we go on this place to watch a movie!!! Often here are rare films or premiere.
We went to Lichtburg to watch the Hateful 8 presented in 70 MM. The whole movie theater was sold out and the atmosphere was great. However if you sit in the stalls area near the back, the viewing experience was actually quite bad. The screen was too small, the sound was bad too. The building itself is quite interesting and worth a visit but i am not so sure about watching movies here. Pop Corn here was quite delicious though.
Most historic cinema in Essen, very comfortable seats, good sound and very nice people as well. You can see all majour movies and some independant stuff as well.
