I lived near this opera house between 2008 - 2010 and have returned several times to see marvellous singers in some interesting productions. The sight lines and acoustic are great in this modern opera house. Prices are great as is the schedule. If you are in Cologne grab a ticket and enjoy a great night at the opera which is more bohemian than the neighbouring bourgeoisie Dusseldorf.

We saw Oper Koln's production of Die Csárdásfürstin and WOW. As a scholar of the Self and Other as presented through opera and drama, I was so impressed by their modernization of the opera. They turned it into a Drag Show adding the layer of acceptance of sexuality as a play on the race issue. The show was performed on a series of stages, linked by cat walks, and instead of sitting in theater seats, we were at tables with wine and drinks, like we were watching a real Drag Show, which is some cases we were. Fantastic experience, one of my favorite shows of all time.

Köln's connection with operatic performances goes back to the mid 18th century, but a permanent home for this majestic art form wasn't constructed until the very beginning of the 20th century, when the Theater am Habsburger Ring was built by the City Fathers in 1902. The buidling was a victim of allied bombing - although later repaired, a desire to embrace the new produced a building - the Oper der Stadt Köln, verging externally on the Soviet-brutal style - in 1957. This kind of architectural experimentation isn't to my personal taste, but - ultimately - what matters in an opera house is the interior...and it doesn't fail to astound.

It's vast, seating an audience of over 1,300, but strikingly beautiful in an edgy way. The boxes resemble over-scale bobsleighs, suspended precariously over the stalls waiting for the winter snow. The orchestra pit is also huge - a definite bonus from a performance standpoint.

I had to sneek in this time, as the building is currently under a major refurbishment programme which will be completed in mid-2013. But from past visits, I can confirm generally excellent accoustics and, compared to Covent Garden prices, tickets at very affordable prices. When it opens again....go!

The current (not permanent) seat of the Cologne Oper is an impressive, globe shaped metalic structure, canopied by blue awning fabric, which makes it very delightful to see, by the Rhine and next to the Dom and the Dom bridge!
I went and saw the Tosca, a very musical performance--you cannot see the orchestra in their deep pit, but the sound is crystal clear!
The direction was somewhat overembalished, the sadistic elements of the play were unpleasantly exaggerated, but the voices were full of passion and their goodness overwhelmed all evil.
There were not blank spaces between the seats for wheelchair people, so I had to move from my wheels onto an ordinary seat, but in the very first row, which was very satisfying for me, as it is usually an exception to the rule of back seats for wheelchairs.

While it's technically a "Stadtoper" (city opera), which might imply that Cologne's opera company might not be on par with the "Staatsoper" (state opera) in other cities, don't be fooled--it's one of the best 5 houses in Germany. They're under renovations right now, though--so their operas are appearing in all sorts of unorthodox places around the city--which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it.
