Owner description: Friedrich the Great's amazing 18th-century palace, reminiscent of the grandeur of Versailles, is surrounded by a magnificent 600-acre park.

It was a small summer palace and we had to wait for our tour for 45 minutes. We did not enjoy the guided tour much due to limited time and space to see everything. It was not big but cost 12 Euro to enter. The number of guests were limited due to the small space in each room, so it was crowded. The main exhibits were the furniture, decorations, paintings, and art works on the ceilings/walls. It was not a good time to visit there due to the season and remodeling/reconstruction going on. The huge well-designed garden should be beautiful but we could not see it in the cold winter. There is no cost for seeing the garden, so we might go again just for the garden next time.

Despite it's imposing, elegant exterior, Sanssouci Palace has a surprising intimate feel inside and 'only' has 11 rooms. It was built as a private summer residence for Frederick the Great as a place where he could relax away from the pomp and ceremony of court life.

Entrance is by timed ticket only which can be pre-booked online. We weren't sure of our timings so didn't pre-book, but started at the much quieter Neues Palace, a pleasant 20 minute stroll through Sanssouci Park. We didn't have to wait long to get on a tour there and they were able to book our time for Sanssouci Palace later that afternoon.

Although accompanied throughout the house, the commentary was via audio-guide; the benefit of this was that everyone could hear and rewind if necessary, the drawback is that it did feel a bit rush at times when we were being herded into the next room.

Frederick the Great was a big admirer of the Rococo period, despite it not being in fashion at the time the palace was commissioned, and the decor and furnishings are very ornate and whimsical with lots of references to nature throughout. All the rooms at at ground level with large windows overlooking the beautifully manicured gardens, although the blinds are now kept drawn to help preserve the treasures inside.

If you have the time, it is definitely worth getting the combined ticket and walking through the park to the Neues Palace, a complete contrast with over 200 rooms!

The Berlin "Versailles". Plenty of ornate decoration, stunning gardens and terraces, a picture gallery with notable works eg Caravaggio

A very large area to explore, lots of things to see and visit, be prepared to do lots of walking. The Chinese Haus is a must see. The old palace is just grand.
