Owner description: The Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) is home to a universe of 'art on paper,' with masterpieces by Sandro Botticelli, Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Adolph Menzel, and Vincent van Gogh, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Pablo Picasso, and – more recently – Andy Warhol and Gerhard Richter. As a museum of the graphic arts, the Kupferstichkabinett is the collection, excellence, and exhibition centre for all draughtsmanship and printmaking, manuscript illumination, and artistic book illustration at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The Kupferstichkabinett is the largest collection of art in the graphic medium in Germany and is one of the four most important museums of its kind worldwide.

There is a small exhibition space attached to the prints collection. We saw an excellently curated historic review of prints and drawings related to music - not much appears to have changed in music teaching for the past 500 years. Probably not worth a trip on its own account, but if you have a three day museum pass well worth coming to after the Gemäldegalerie. Also we had a very pleasant lunch in the museum cafe.

The entrance is difficult to find: inside Gemäldegalerie, go to the left and find it on the 1st floor. It's not at the library building.

There were a few nice pieces but the exhibition in general was not impressive at all. The curating was a bit messy. There are much more interesting museums in Berlin to visit.

This museum is said to have so many permanent items we would love to have seen but only has room to display a few at a time or, if there's a temporary exhibition on, none at all. The official website should make clear that it is a study room, not a gallery instead of describing the thousands of objects they have but that you can't see displayed.

I went there because I thought it's a normal museum with displayed drawings and prints (that's what was mentionned in the "museum pass" brochure), but it turned out to be more like a study room where u can search for the prints u want.

And its not the only museum/exhibition inside the building
