“Nice 2 klm walk outside Arles”

Pont Van-Gogh (Pont de Langlois)
Reviewed 4 April 2018

The old bridge is worth a visit. Still in very good condition and not tarted up as a tourist attraction. Nice walk alongside the canal from Arles centre. Lots of barges and wildflowers.

I was anxious to see the famous bridge depicted in Van Gogh paintings. It is not located in the original place. Moved out of town to a pretty bad neighborhood. Not sure if any part of it is original or just a reproduction. It is unkempt, rusty and has weeds around it. Obviously the city doesn't take care of it. If you are a fan of Van Gogh, drive to it (do not walk). Otherwise, concentrate on more interesting places.

A nice area, where you get to walk along the river till you get to the bridge. Will recommend you doing it, when the weather is nice

Now a quiet spot beside abandoned rail lines on the edge of town with estate housing and factories nearby nevertheless it is recognisable to VG painting, nice that it survives without vandalism that would be inevitable in UK. Close to the Rhone, signposted from eastern bank road, so easily accessible by car, casual parking on the old railway. You can just imagine a busier spot when the trains and carts made this the thoroughfare, worth a few minutes diversion.

So called Pont Van-Gogh is an interesting wooden bascule bridge that Vincent Van Gogh captured on few of his paintings. It is now located (when Vincent was painting it, it was situated much closer to the town center) on a channel cca 3 km form the town center and most of the walk isn't really charming - the area is mainly industrial. It isn't suitable for a picnic - there is a lot of rubbish in the nearby grass surfaces. I think that for Van Gogh admirers, the bridge is a must-see item (I ran there few years ago to take a picture for my girlfriend, because we had to hurry back for the last train - train station is other side of town - and she hadn't enough stamina to run with me; this year I saw a Japanese girl to come there in a cab, took a few photos and left the site right after she came :). It is certainly interesting also for technology monument fans, but an "average" tourist would probably not appreciate the site very much.
