I found this hotel in Feb and decided this would suit us well but the prices were exhorbitant (starting at 400 euros) so I booked the Mercure. 2 days before the visit I looked again and they had a few rooms left priced at 160 and 200 euros, so I switched. We stayed 5 nights (visiting family) and felt very comfortable. Our party were spread over 4 rooms (2 'comfort', 2 'standing') and all were excellent. The only advantage of the 'standing' was the balconies (nice, but perhaps not really worth the price difference). The comfort and functionality and quality of the accommodation was really impressive - they seemed to get everything right . It was quiet (double glazing), dark (black out curtains) and cool (silent ,effective aircon) - very welcome as it was 30+C outside. The beds were large and extremely comfortable with noticeably fine quality sheets. Robes and slippers provided. The bathrooms were superb - all black and white tiles, with 2 basins, bath/shower with overhead rain shower and hand held power shower and soft large (un-French)towels. The only comment was the rooms seemed rather sombre (all brown, black and grey - very new, with art on the walls) and a bit dark in daytime despite full length windows. We thought breakfast at 22 euros was not worth having as there is such a good choice of cafes within 1 minute walk just around the corner overlooking the marina/port. Staff were pleasant, some were exceptionally helpful. However, there was a little inefficiency with the booking and especially the bill. Due to an early morning departure we asked at 7pm for the bill to be ready by 11pm so we could pay the night before, but it didn't happen and it took quite a while for a correct version to be produced, so it left me lacking confidence in the staff if relying on them for something important. The only other negative was the PC available for guests to access the Internet - everyday we had to find staff to unlock the password because the previous user had closed down the last screen. I have to admit that previous user was often me! The warning message didn't seem to appear until it was too late. It was a minor annoyance, but over 5 days it got quite irritating, especially when I just wanted to check in online for flights home! The location is simply the best in Ajaccio, surrounded by old narrow streets with 'local' bars/cafes and we will be staying again next year. We had a look at other hotels while there, but didn't see anything promising - what we saw seemed to confirm the generally poor tripadvisor reviews for other places. San Carlu was nearby in a good location. Mercure and Best Western are on the outskirts, but Mercure is much closer to the centre. Napoleon was also in a good location. Les Mouettes is on the outskirts (in the direction of the good beaches), but next to a petrol station and they didn't answer my emails and had no internet booking!
