We were quite disappointed with our stay at the Clarence. The lobby was dated and drab. Most staff were accommodating, although one of the concierge staff was rather rude and unhelpful. Our room was very dated, smelled, and not at all welcoming. We were very disappointed with this hotel, especially for the price we paid. Although the location was close to the Temple Bar area (if you want to be close to that area), there wasn’t much else positive that this hotel offered.

It's of great concern to us that you found one of our concierge team to be rude and unhelpful and we offer sincere apologies if any communication was mistakenly interpreted this way, as it would never be intended as such. The feedback regarding other elements of your stay that you point out as being disappointing are appreciated though I would counter that some points are a matter of personal taste rather than a shortfall on the part of the hotel. Any matter that raised at the front desk as an issue for you was addressed immediately regardless of the aggressive tone in which the issue was raised, and we also believe we were very accommodating in amending your reservation at extremely short notice during your stay to your benefit.

Despite the above negative comments that were mentioned during your first visit which we re addressed at the time, we were happy to offer you more space to ensure enhanced comfort upon your return visit to us just a few days later, again to your benefit rather than the hotel and it's a pity that this proactive customer service didn't form a positive you say we are lacking in.

We stayed at the Clarence Hotel in February for a 3 day break and enjoyed our stay.n The Clarence is only a couple of minutes walk from Temple bar and very close to shops, restaurants and bars. We did not eat here so cannot comment on the food. We did use the bar most evenings and the barman was friendly and chatty. We particularly enjoyed finishing our evenings with a nightcap in the large oak panelled lounge area which was a nice change from the noise and music in Temple Bar. Our room was nice and clean but we did have to keep the window blind down all the time because we were totally overlooked, also the bathroom although very clean was looking a little tired and was in need of updating. The room had a well stocked minibar which included champagne and snacks also a price list so you wouldn't get a massive shock when you checked out. There was also a hair dryer and tea/coffee making facilities. The room had a small digital safe inside the wardrobe which amused us because it was not bolted down and if we had been burgled, the burglar could simply have put the safe into a bag and scarpered. This did not spoil our visit and we would definitely visit this hotel again.

I have been in Dublin before but this was my first stay at this hotel. The hotel is located right along the river in Temple bar area. I have been the reviews that it it is a bit dated and could use a makeover. Maybe yes but I thought it was clean and comfortable. My husband wanted to stay because it is owned by members of U2. We got into our room and were then shown out to our balcony, the place where they shot the video for 'Beautiful Day' my husband was elated! the balcony had a FANTASTIC view of Dublin. yes there is a bar below that was apparently going into the wee hours of the morning but I did not hear it at all. The reception was very friendly and helped out a great deal. The breakfast was awesome and hit the spot for a day of sightseeing. Near temple bar area but not in the thick of it where you hear all the bar goers. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: for U2 fans - ask for room 508 it is the room where U2 shot the video for Beautiful day.

The Clarence Hotel's claim to fame is that it was once, or maybe still is, owned by members of Irish Rock band U2. I've never stayed but have visited on a few occasions for drinks. I'd describe the bar as quiet, unassuming and feeling a little tired in terms of ambiance and decor. Filled with wall-to-wall wooden panelling, there's a definite lack of colour and vibrancy. Drinks are standard and staff efficient enough. Pleasant and inoffensive but not outstanding. Maybe now in need of a makeover...

Thanks for posting a review of The Clarence Hotel, though as you mention in your review you've never stayed and as such your experience can only be limited to a fraction of the hotel, namely the bar, and you point out this is the only part you have visited. We appreciate you comments about The Octagon Bar and hope that in future you will have a greater experience there.

This isn’t a big whinge, more a reflection. The price was fine and I had a reasonable stay. It’s just that it didn’t meet my expectation. I’ve stayed at the Clarence a couple of times before but not for a while. It didn’t have the buzz I remember - maybe out of season- but it just felt like there are too many dead spaces. The restaurant is not at all special and the public rooms are not comfortable to be in. The rooms are very heavy on oak which is nice in a way but feel heavily. Good size though. The plumbing is actually poor given what is expected these days. No proper shower, just over a bath. Lovely staff. It feels as if the place needs an overhaul.

It's a pity that we did not meet your expectations on this occasion and your feedback about why this was the case is appreciated as is the kind comment about the team here. We hope that in the future you'll return and find that your expectations are met and hopefully exceeded on that occasion.
