Owner description: St Andrews Castle is the ruins of the castle of the Archbishops of St Andrews, dating in part from the 13th century. On a headland to the north of St Andrews stand the ruins of the city's castle, the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews and the focal point of the church in medieval Scotland. Explore the underground 16th-century siege mine and counter-mine, and the 'bottle dungeon', one of the most infamous castle prisons in medieval Britain, which was cut out of the solid rock. John Knox and George Wishart may have been imprisoned in this dank and airless space, and this is where its believed Cardinal Beaton’s body was kept when he was murdered in 1546. We had some time before we left St. Andrews and thought the castle would be an adventure. Way way too cold for us, but the grounds were lovely and the history interesting.

As part of our English Heritage Membership we visited this castle for free. The sea views are fantastic. History of the castle is well set out. The tunnel (mine) is quite claustrophobic, but amazing. Well worth a visit.

Part of our Explorer Pass and something quite different, go down the mine to see the tunnel to mine under the castle walls and the defenders tunnel to meet it. A curator onsite told us all about the history of the mines and the castle.

Entry to the castle is via the visitor centre which has a history of the castle on the corridor walls leading to the entrance, as well as the obligatory shop. The castle itself is in fairly good condition considering it is a ruin and has some great views along the coastline.

I really loved that place and I'd like to visit it next time. Although castle is in ruin, it is breathtaking. Beautiful views on the sea. It is worth to buy a ticket and got to know little about its history.
