Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

You had to be brave to visit this castle on a cold wet and windy day.

You have to go from attraction to attraction outside and you get soaked and freeze. It sits on an exposed rock in the middle of the city with winds howling around it.

However that said it was very interesting but would be much better in summer.

Friendly people too.

Thank Chris R

Went to the Castle over Easter weekend. Found the exhibits very interesting and well laid out. Queued to get in but not for long, prices are slightly cheaper if you book ahead online.
Café was very expensive (£10 for a square of pizza?!), and overcrowded. Tables laid out badly so difficult to sit down. Massive queue for toilets, and no toilet paper in any of them!
Great views and castle overall a good day out.

Queued about an hour to gain entry on a bitterly cold Easter Saturday, great views with options to view just the Crown Jewels or their full history although we didn't know about the former until after the event...comfy footwear a must!

Whether or not you care about the history of the Castle isn't relevant -- it is the best vantage point for 360 views of the city. We were lucky to go on a cold, but sunshine-y day, and took a leisurely stroll about the grounds without a audio guide. We likely would have absorbed more with one, but this was the tail end of our time in Scotland and we couldn't be bothered. We just made it onto the hilltop for the 1pm cannon firing, which was impressive -- more impressive, seeing the soldiers in their red coats and bear hats!! (forgive my lack of knowledge, I am sure they have a proper regiment name). The exhibits inside were very well organized and a good use of the spaces they have available. Definitely recommended.
