Description: A famous inn and restaurant since the early 60’s, The Walnut Tree sits two miles east of Abergavenny. It offers proper dining and drinking in an informal setting. There are around 20 tables simply laid. The restaurant seats up to 70 diners and we open from Tuesday to Saturday, lunchtime and evening. The food is an eclectic mix, based on Shaun Hill’s personal taste, paired with sound cooking techniques; rather than a particular country's cuisine. A unifying feature is the core of excellent ingredients.

We ate there last thursday evening and stayed at Ivy Cottage next door. Food and service were exceptional. For starters we had scallops, souffle and brill which were all delicious and main courses were 2 x duck and 2 x fillet of beef. Very good quality and also good portion size. Only 2 of us had dessert (which also shows portion sizes for quality of restaurant were good) and boith were said to be delicious. Staying at Ivy Cottage meant no driving and what a beautiful cottage which sleeps 4. Breakfast was self catering but provisons included eggs, fresh bread from Angel Bakery, hams, smoked salmon, butter as well as all varieties of teas and coffee. Overall a brilliant experience!

It's been a while since I've written a review, but thought I would make an exception regarding the Walnut Tree;

There were 4 of us for dinner on a Thursday evening and as it was beautifully sunny and warm, we started with an aperitif outside. Although there was a vacant table we were left to find our own chairs and cart them across the terrace, Not the start you wanted. Although the menu was very short (about 5 starters and 5 main courses) there was no explanation from the waiter as to the dishes or even worse, we were left to get on with the wine menu. When the food arrived, they had forgotten to order the mashed potato (for all of us) so we just made do without. Also, everyone ordered sweet with accompanying liqueurs or cocktails, mine drink didn't arrive until after the sweet was finished. I have to state that all the dishes were great and very well cooked. However, although this restaurant is in an old pub, it is now a Michelin-stared restaurant, it's a shame that the service hasn't caught up with the food. I shouldn't have been so generous with the tip.

A first trip back after 20 years, and much looked forward to.

Food was good but not exceptional which is so disappointing. All was well cooked but presentation was lacking for a michelin restaurant.

I don’t give 5 star reviews but this restaurant just outside of Abergavenny deserves nothing less. It is expensive and the room is noisy but the food and service are indeed Michelin standard. The fillet steak was succulent and perfectly cooked, the best I have ever eaten.
