Owner description: Located on the banks of River Avon, this is considered one of England's most-visited Parish Churches and the site where William Shakespeare was baptized in 1564 and buried in 1616. In addition to Shakespeare's grave the 800 year-old church has some notable stained glass windows and 26 carved misericords dating from the 1400s. The high altar is one of the very few pre-reformation stone altars still in use in England today. Also of note is the sanctuary knocker on the inner porch door dating from the 1200s - anyone touching this could claim sanctuary within for 37 days.

We visited to show our family the final resting place of Shakespeare. The church is beautiful in itself- although busy with tourists, people are respectful. Adults have to pay £3 to visit the grave and teenagers £2.

We visited the church specifically to visit Shakespeare’s grave and we are so glad we did. There is a recommended donation of £3 to visit the grave, which is situated at the back of the church next to Anne Hathaway and other members of his family. Before reaching the end of the church, you pass information boards which detail parts of Shakespeare’s life.

The church is truly stunning, with the most gorgeous stained-glass windows throughout.

This church has a majestic splendor at a riverbank location but it is not as it would have been in Shakspearian times. Enlarged and extended and now refurbished. Some superb stained glass window work. As stroll around the fast eroding grave stones is also an education into the Tudor period.

Excellent- definitely worth the walk. Small contribution required which was reasonable. Friendly and informative people around.

This church is a must visit on any trip to Stratford. Sitting on the banks of the Avon, and with parts dating back to the 12th C, this is truly history alive. As you wander through the graveyard, you can see that the average life expectancy then was about 40 years, and 60% of children did not reach maturity .
The inside of the church is even more stunning. From the grave stones of the Shakespeare family , to the crypt and cenataph of Clopton, whose name appears almost as frequently as Will's!!!

The carving on the choir stalls are amazingly intricate, and the stained glass is some of the best in the UK.
