Description: Established in 1239 as a Dominican friary, Blackfriars is believed to be the oldest purpose-built restaurant in the UK, having served as the refectory for the Dominican friars more than 800 years ago. Today it serves gutsy, traditional British food using seasonal produce from the local farms and producers; showcasing the North East at its best. As well as an excellent value lunch and early evening menu they also serve an a la carte menu and the best Sunday roast in Newcastle. After dining at Blackfriars you will see why it was voted Taste of England at the North East England Tourism Awards. There is also a cosy Parlour Bar for a drink, bar snack or cocktail before or after dinner. Above the restaurant Blackfriars has a Cookery School and wine, beer and whisky Tasting Room. Blackfriars also has a 50-seat Banquet Hall for private dining, corporate and private parties and weddings and a beautiful Cloister Garden for al fresco dining.

Another annual pilgrimage to one of our favourite restaurants in the world. Once again we took a dear local lady friend who is deaf, whom everyone treated with great courtesy and attention. Excellent service of course and delicious food in a very remarkable and delightful restaurant. Its range of locally sourced food is amazing - and so reasonable priced for first-class cooking.
It's worth going for the place itself. It is sobering to know that in the space you are now using, people have been eating since 1239; indeed it is believed to be the longest-established continuous eating place in England.

Visited on 29th March 2018 for my 25th birthday dinner.
Had visited once previously and save this restaurant for special occasions as the food and atmosphere is amazing.

Myself and my boyfriend chose from the set menu. Its worth noting I’m gluten free and can COMPLETELY recommend Blackfriars as being 100% perfect for coeliacs.

I had the Northumbrian Ham Terrine with Pease Pudding and Pickles to start- Pan Roasted Chicken with Potato Rösti- Lemon Cheesecake for dessert.
My partner had the Potato and Wild Garlic soup, Crispy Pork Belly and Sticky Toffee Pudding.

From the beginning to the end the whole experience was amazing, fantastic food, drink and ambience. The staff (sadly didn’t get their names) were incredible and made me very comfortable ordering gluten free.

Can not recommend enough!

We met for Saturday lunch, selecting from the set menu - £15 for 2 courses, £18 for 3.
We had a well positioned table and were seated promptly. Service was friendly and efficient. As we’d pre-ordered, the food was served promptly.
We all enjoyed the meal, although the portions could be a bit larger.

Such a lovely restaurant. Food was delicious. Staff were really polite and welcoming. Took my 1 year old daughter and nothing was too much trouble. She enjoyed Mac n Cheese from the Little Monks menu whilst I had the three course lunch special with a glass of fizz. Enjoyed fishcake starter, chicken main then lemon cheesecake. Started with a gin in the bar before our meal. Nice atmosphere. Will recommend and return!!!

An excellent choice for a lively weekend lunch. High quality food, reasonably priced. Wife is vegetarian but doesn’t care what is on the menu, she says, as it is always done so well. Recommended
