Myself, my 3 year old daughter with Autism, and a group of friends with their children went to the Whitehills for lunch on the 9th of Feb. Going out for lunch is not something we tend to do, because my daughter is Autistic and so her food is very limited and can become very overwhelmed. But we figured it was an open space and a family friendly pub...
On the menu they had beans as a side. I noticed they also had bread. Toast and beans tends to be the only thing my daughter will eat. I went to order, and when I asked whether we could have the side of beans and a piece of toast (which we would pay for) the server needed to check with the manager how to price it up. The manager came over and said ‘we don’t do toast, you can have a brioche bun’. I asked if they had no bread at all and that I would really appreciate it ‘we have bread but we keep that for other dishes.’. I reiterated that it’s really difficult going out and I would really appreciate just a piece of toast; ‘No we don’t do toast’. I asked for just beans.
I noticed they had a shop next to the pub, so went to buy some bread and just asked really nicely if they would ‘toast some bread for me’... the manager responded ‘yes’.
The food all came out, and the toast was literally black... they had turned over the second piece to hide how black one was. The beans was two teaspoons worth. My daughter then got very upset as she could see the food but couldn’t eat it. She then began to bite and thrash around, so we left having not eaten either of our meals.
I saw the manager outside and said that the reason my daughter only eats toast is because she’s Autistic and a bit of awareness and empathy wouldn’t go amiss. He replied ‘ we don’t do toast as we need the bread’. I then said some kids with ASD can’t eat anything other than beige food, you had a shop next door... I was willing to pay for it (probably equivalent to a whole loaf!) and that he needs to really reflect on how he can be more flexible for his customers needs..
So disappointed as thought it could be a nice local for us for lunch etc.
Avoid at all costs.
